Default I-PODS

Thinking it's about time I joined the technical revloution, binned my walkman and bought an I-Pod.

Having put on some serious timber since Christmas (heaviest I've ever been at over 18 stone ) I'm cutting back on the weight training and concentrating on cardio which is where the I-Pod comes in. I find I can only run/cylce/row, etc for any great period of time when I've got some tunes to listen to.

As main use will be in the gym or outside running it needs to be compact so was thinking of getting a Nano, have these still got a bad reputation for being fragile and breaking easily?

Any suggestions please on best place to buy and how much I should be paying will be much appreciated

Cheers

Chris

Me and Sal have both got i-pod nanos for going to the gym, we love them! As for being fragile, the first time out with mine I dropped it on the treadmill and nearly wrenched my ears off! Then it hit the belt and was flung across the room! It still works perfectly!

One downside is the headphones, they're dire so deffo upgrade them!

Thumbs up

Hi Chris

I bought a 2 Gb Nano at Christmas and I love it. Dixons seem to be about as cheap as anyone else (excluding eBay) and they do some good bundles. Expect to pay around £140 for the 2 Gb and and around £100 for the 1 Gb. Apple's prices are also pretty keen.

Reliability wise, I've had no problems at all. I also bought a car conversion kit by Dension which hard wires the Nano into the car stereo - brilliant piece of kit.

Nano downsides:

- Scratches incredibly easy so get yourself a skin or cover.
- The user interface works well with the jog wheel but there's annoying things like not being able to scroll backwards from songs that begin with 'A' to those that begin with 'Z'.
- iTunes is a bit prescriptive but there are programs on the web you can download to make it more flexible.

All in all and great bit of kit and thoroughly recommended unless you've got a gazillion CDs you need to listen to on the hoof.

Cheers
Kav

Yes! Forgot to mention that. I got myself a set of Shure E2Cs - thoroughly recommended but everybody'd tabs are different so if you can, try before you buy. They do have adaptors and what-not but they're not to everyone's liking.

Sal and I got Shure ear buds too, really good, the bass is incredible!

My car has aux inputs on the back so I bought a 3.5mm jack to aux wire, I can use the i-pod in the car but the head unit controls won't drive the i-pod...I just stick it on shuffle anyway so it doesn't matter!

Cheers for the imput.

Got shed load of CD's so will probably be loading these onto it rather than downloading from the web

£140.00 seems reasonable, how much for a decent set of headphones?

Going to London on Saturday so will probably pick one up then.

Hi Chris

I think the Shures start around £55 and go up from there.

mmm, iPods.

Took me a while to take the plunge and get an iPod, simply as I'm lazy. But I've had my 40GB 4th Gen iPod for a while now and it's great. I've upgraded the battey to a higher capacity model and it's pretty simple to do.

As for Nano's being fragile, have a look here a bit of stress testing by Ars Technica. In other words, they might scratch easilly, but they are pretty tough, and certainly tougher than my 4G, and probable the iPod video.

I would recommend a screen protector, or maybe a case with a lanyard cable, or possibly an armband. Ideally I'd not have the thing on show and change from the white headphones, as muggers tend to see the white headphones and think "iPod owner, nice, I'll have that off them". There's been a spate of muggings over here based on that exact principle.

Question

Hi Markus

A little off-topic, I know, but why is there no honour without meat pie?

I have 2 40 gig versions and they are rubbish if that helps. All sorts of problems that can only be fixed by rests and letting the battery run flat. I-tunes is rubbish as well.

terrible software lets the ipods down.....and the annoying attempts to halt piracy just **** off everyone while the pirates just find a way round.

I bought a 2gb sandisc mp3 player which is the same size as a shuffle, doesnt need any software installed (drag and drop) has a built in microphone recorder and was a hell of a lot cheaper at $120.

Laun,
What sorts of problems are you having? Why do you consider iTunes rubbish?

Freak,
What don't you like about iTunes?

Both - I'm not being argumentative, just curious to know the issues.

I have the Video, but the wife has a Nano that she takes to the Gym.
I just watch/listed to MTV when im on the treadmill

The other benefit is the fact that you can get kits to play them in the car, like a huge CD changer, that you can contol from the head unit.

They keep freezing or the menu button stops working so you can't select another album to play. The only way to make it work is play the thing untill the battery goes flat and then it works again. All the problems with I-tunes I have mentioned on here before so I won't go into it again. These problems appeared within 2 weeks of each other on two different ipods that were purchased together. The list of reliability issues with them is huge.

One assumes you've had them replaced via Applecare?
