Default Speaker impedance guitar amp

Quick question

I have a guitar amp (Vox AD30VT) and the original speaker is 8ohm, I bought a new Celestion G10 Vintage, that was supposed to be 8ohm, but it turns out it is 16ohm

What will the effect be if I swap speakers, and run with the 16ohm speaker instead

Reduced power (loudness) but your amp will run cooler.

I would swap the speaker for the correct impedance one. I expect that Celestion do the G10 vintage in different impedances, for different applications - 1x10, 2x10, 4x10 etc.

Why do you want to exchange it? Is it bust?

Thanks Bubba

Its a better speaker than the one that came with the amp

and the one they use on the bigger models, they do do the G10 vintage in 8 ohms, I asked the guy to make sure it was the 8ohm speaker, and when it turned up today, it was the 16ohm one, and not sure if I can be bothered to mess about sending it back

I would expect about 20% reduction in volume (at a guess) if you swap, which will bugger up the whole idea of buying a better speaker - although the new one will probably have better sensitivity than the old. If he's sent you the wrong one, get him to send you the correct one plus some money for the return carriage of the wrong one.

Be bothered, he's foofed up.

LOL I just sent him an email, ive bought from him before a few times, so he should be ok about it

the whole reason I bought the 30watt one, (I had the 15watt one to begin with and took it back cos it was too loud for the house, to get a good sound out of it) was because the 30watt one has a wattage reducer for bedroom levels, but master on high

His original ad said he has 16ohms in stock, and i thought you had to specify what ohm you wanted, so I may have foofed up on this one

Do you mean it has a Gain/Master volume arrangement so you can get a crunchy sound at low volume?

it has a seperate dial on the back of the amp, to reduce the wattage without reducing the sound, so yes a nice crunchy overdriven valve sound, at bedroom levels
