Default Upset a car dealer today

Went to look at a car today. Was looking for either a brand new one or pre-reg'd. Saw 3 in the dealership all 'normal' editions. Test drove the car and decided we wanted one subject to price etc.

Left my details with a request for a cost to change on 2 of the cars in stock and said I would call back as I had another appointment. The other appointment was to view a special edition of the car - the only one available on the auto-trader. To be fair did not mention this to the dealer.

The special edition was a little more than I wanted to spend but depending on the price of the standard car it would have been worth the extra.

Called the first dealer whilst looking at the other car whilst still in the dealership only for him to refuse to quote me as it was "unconventional" to quote under those circumstances. He got quite an **** on with me. The dealer with the special edition was surprised at this and was prepared for a bit of haggling (seemed well up for this as he told me the mark up on the extras etc).

I appreciate dealer 1 thought I would try to screw them down on the price by playing one against the other - I would have done this regardless of which premesis I was on. I always do this, and I am am sure they always try to get you pay more.

Did I break some unwritten rule?

PS Ended up getting the special edition car.

Car is actually for the wife (honest).

Was looking at a Mazda MX5 2.0i sport or a Launch edition MX5 (the one we bought).

The first dealer had a sport with hardtop stickered at £20,300 which during our 'chat' he then said was priced wrong and did not include the hardtop. He also did not know what a launch edition was - muppet

PS be glad when these leather chaps are worn in a bit. They rub in all the wrong places!

I personally found Audi salesmen to be the worst I've ever experienced. Arrogant Pr*cks that can't afford the cars they're selling and yet have a laissez-faire sanctimonous attitude....I bought a BMW that time round. Put me off audi's for life...w*nkers...

I met a **** @ a mitsi dealer last week. Told me that before I could test drive a evo I would have to agree to the deal, figures & sign

yea right. He is probulary still standing there in the same spot that I left him when I turned around laughing & walked out of the door without an other word.

Dealers ........... don't you just love 'em??

To be fair to them, they must get some right idiots waltzing in and demanding test drives and then wandering off without any intention of purchasing - they will make a judgement within 10 seconds on the prospects of a customer buying.

Subaru Dealers, on the whole, have been great with me ....... I will ignore the ****ty Sales manager at Spar****ts, Botley for now (he must surely have been sacked, I had the 'pleasure' of the **** 6 years ago) so, maybe, they are better now?

Mazda dealers are weird, really weird, they appear not to want to do a deal - ok, there is pushy and not so pushy, but these are positively horizontal!! So laid back, every attempt I make to open negotiations are just met with a blank smile ................... I want to do a deal!!!!!! They don't seem to want to talk unless you are actually going to sign at List price!!

Mind you, a blind monkey can sell MX5s when the sun shines A bit like Imprezas 6 years ago!
