haven't used one, but I know a few people who use them. The DoT haven't really decided if these are legal in the UK yet. The question arises over wether the second car becomes a trailer or not. There are various types of A frame - some of them hook up to the brakes on the second car so that it has a kind of overrun brake. Others don't. Depends what you are towing and what you are towing with.
The legality probably wont be decided until someone has a bad crash using one of them and them the insurance companies will fight it out in court.
This might give you some info, but when the DoT says 'We believe' it means they don't really know

I used an Aframe for a few years while working for the RAC until we switched to trailers, the main points to consider are,
1,Any vehicle on the frame must be taxed, mot'd and insured.
2,The vehicle on the frame must weigh no more than 750kg to comply with towing regs as it is classed as an unbraked trailer.
3,To get round point 2 you can tow heavier vehicles if they are genuinely brokendown and you are recovering said vehicle to a repairer/place of safety.(thats how RAC,AA etc get around the regs)
4,You also need to consider gross train weight which is the total weight of the casualty vehicle and towing vehicle, this must not exceed the weight printed on the towing vehicles VIN plate.(eg you cant use a fiesta to tow a granada).
As for using the Aframe they easily fit most but not all vehicles (BMW's are a bit wayward) in a matter of mins and you should attatch a tow board.
Once towing you can forget about the car behind you as it is very smooth and follows a nice tight line, they are far nicer than 2 wheel towing dolies to use. Mark..

Never had any dramas with an Aframe once you've used it a few times you can fix it on in 5 mins.Very safe way of towing a vehicle in my opinion as long as the recovery vehicle is big enough to pull and slow the bulk of the casualty vehicle.
As for tow dollies the ones where the broken down vehicles wheels sit inside the dolly wheels tow fine, the ones where the broken down vehicle sit over the top of the dollys axle are a bit unstable.
P.S even with a tow dolly the towed vehicle still need to be taxed, mot'd etc as two of its wheels are going to be on the road. Mark.
