I like 'em. Got an old pair of Tannoy 605s (the hexagonal jobs). When I get round to buying some more audio, I'm going to get a pair of Tannoy floorstanders.

agreed, they always sound smooth, although they need to be partnered well,

A mate of mine ran my 611,s on his valve amp setup,,, the bass was totaly overblown, mind you they were only a week old,,,, prolly sound superb now

A mate of mine also has the 611's. The bass does sound overblown if you're using the wrong partnering kit, with his original amp, the treble sounded very harsh and unrealistic too. He then moved up to some nice Quad amps and a better source, and the speakers suddenly sounded quite decent. Kind of backs up your "need to be partnered well" statement. They do image pretty well, the bass goes nice and low and they have decent punch. Sometimes a bit clinical and lacking in delicacy, from my recollection.

Personally, I much prefer my Ruarks, but then again they cost more, are well amped and anyway hi-fi is always a matter of personal choice.

Thats right, if i recall they were reviewed as "on the warm side of neutral"

I used some Thomas Dolby to demo them with, the track one of our submarines, the treble in that was/ is electric, with a real piercing shriek, not easy to do without distortion, it was what convinced me, to buy the 611,s as opposed to the 609,s mine you i wouldnt mind a set of 609,s as my rear surrounds ...

hmmm now can i convince the other half i need them...

Allways fancied demo-ing a set of westminster royales, i reckon a 15" Dc would sound very potent.

mind you i could never justify the price tag

Depends which model. I found that was the case with their classic series (Talsiman etc), but their Sterling references (like my Equinoxes, the even nicer Solstices and Excaliburs) are a bit livelier - what hi-fi called the Equinoxe "deft and delicate with a sting in the tail". Anyway, the topic was about Tannoy's. The 611's were definitely capable of piercing treble without distortion, just a bit too much so for my tastes with some partnering kit. As I said, fine if partnered with the right amp.

Got a pair of System 100s, and used to monitor playback through some Buckinghams.

Gotta say, whilst I get the whole DC/Point source theory side, I've never been a MAJOR fan of Tannoys Can't put my finger on what it is though.

I prefer the ATC scm's - much nicer

Can't disagree with the ATC side of things. Great customer service as well; I have one of their power amps and when it started humming slightly, they said "bring it in, we'll fix it, no charge. If you spend that sort of money on electronics its meant to last". When I collected it, they gave me a nice little tour round their "factory" (more a big industrial unit, just east of Stroud), saw some of the serious kit in various stages of build. Anyway, I digress from the topic again.
