I've transfered money to an American company before and no charge was made, but that was bank transfer via paypal. AFAIK you only pay if its over a certain amount.

How do I send a payment in another currency?

To send a payment in another currency, just go to the Send Money tab. Fill out the payment details and select the currency you wish to use to fund your payment from the Currencies drop-down menu. Your seller will receive an email letting them know the amount and currency of your payment

Where can I find PayPal's foreign exchange rates?

You can view PayPal's current exchange rates at any time by logging in to your account and accessing the Currency Converter. The exchange rate applicable to your transaction is displayed before you complete your payment, so you always have the opportunity to consider your alternatives before you complete the transaction.

Please note that for credit card transactions, if you choose to use the credit card association's currency conversion procedures, PayPal is not able to disclose the exchange rate to you. In this case, you will see the exchange rate on your credit card billing statement.

all from the PayPal help. They dont exactly hide the info !
