Guitarists - Your advice please..!
Can anyone recommend a decent online retailer..? I like using www.guitars.co.uk but they are not stocking Gibson at the mo, so I am a little bit stuck.
Also, for any Strat players, has anyone coupled this to a BOSS MT2 - just wondering what sound I can expect from that setup - weird I know, but could be interesting
Thanks all

Whereabouts are you? Andertons are a decent store in Guildford and do some on-line as well. Can't help on your BOSS question.

Whatever you do, DON'T buy from
www.soundsmusical.com
They sell all kinds of musical gear... well they take your order and your money but nothing turns up and you can't get your money back off them

Why buy anything blind, Mr. Oik? Particularly anything as subjective in its appeal as a musical instrument? Fair play, if you wish to buy a deWalt 18V battery for one of your cordless tools then fill your boots: cost is your only concern.
Only an eejit would buy something like a guitar untried.
Unless it's a vintage guitar and you're buying it as an investment. Which is **** as well.
IMO.

I'm with Bubba on this, guitars have to be tried unless you have previously tried it and want a price match.
I only bought mine online (ebay) cos I couldn't find a Matt black 1988 Gibson SG in any shop.

If you know what you want, and you are familiar with the product, I can assure you that buying online whether it be a shop or an auction, can achieve a perfectly good instrument.
Interestingly, a guitar I tried in a shop turned out not to suit me in the long run, I sold it ... online. The same make and model instrument, with a slightly different neck profile, was bang on. I bought that, online.
You have fickle hands, it would seem!
IMO.

I haven't played it since I bought it. It needs restoring (but is playable) and work have got in the way.
In the near future I intend to sit down with a few tabs and my old books and relearn it. I haven't played since 1987 - 1988 (see the significance, well part of it there is another reason too)
However, the bit I think your getting at is I bought it untried online. I know what a Gibson SG feels like when I play 1, I have played a few before, the question mark for me was the sound. I laso asked the seller for lots of photos and asked a huge amount of questions as well.

Are you going to be performing the restoration?
Tone, as you say, is hugely important ... I have played some <po>communicative instruments</po> with dreadful pups and have struggled to achieve an agreeable sound!
I hope you aren't too offended at being referred to as an 'idiot'!

It will indeed be getting restored, but not by me, its being done proffesionally. I wouldn't dream of trying to restore something like this.

I will post pics when its done. However when its getting done I'm not sure. Might be in the next couple of months though. 1 thing that will be changing is the keys, they are the modern Gibson style fake ivory plastic horrible things, to be replaced with a nice set of solid stainless keys but in the same shape as the current ones.

I bought mine online (an ESP LTD MH-400 without tremolo) Couldn't find any local(ish) shops that stocked it, so I bought it online from what looked like a massive place and turned out to be a small shop in Burton on Trent. The good thing is that that small shop turned out to be one of the old traditional style music shops and not the like of Fox's where they are more interested in showing you how good they are rather than letting you try the instrument.
I've been very happy with it since I bought it, but then I would as the guitar far surpasses my talents

I'm from the North West, so I am surrounded by some very good guitar shops, which I visit quite a lot. If you can tell one Les Paul Standard Gold Top from another then fine, I have difficulty with it
I'd rather pay the least cash you see, that's the top and bottom of it, and buying online means I get exactly what I want without the bother of going into a shop and more than likely - paying WAY over the odds.
I also don't have to deal with those perpetual I'm-going-to-be-big-oneday losers that enjoy playing Steve Vai tracks in your face, just to justify their minimum wage joy

Lol, I sounded a bit harsh, didn't I?
Fair comment about the music shop divs.

Have been thinking about learning to play the guitar, as it is something I have always wanted to do.
Can anyone recommend a decent starter guitar (electric), I have quite small hands if that makes any difference. Have always fancied a Les Paul copy.
Sorry to hijack the thread.
