Importing from the states....
Mmmm, tricky one to explain, but something's for sale in the states, secondhand, and i'm off to the same area of the states in May, if i bring something back in my luggage that is secondhand, whatv are the chances of getting stung for import duty or VAT... or does that only apply to new goods, and thereofre there would be none to pay....??
My luggage allowance is huge, hence the questions....
Thanks..

How big is it? can you fit it in a case?
I have a "friend" who brings a few thousand dollars worth of stuff back every year, no problems so far. But you have to have a stratergy!

Thanks guys, it's not too big to fit in a case, but it is a bit heavy, weight limit per case is 32kg, 115 quid excess luggage charge....Mmmm
I know that if you buy electrical goods and actually use them you don't pay duty, so i was kind of hoping that the same might be for car parts....????

My friend goes there with nothing whatsoever just the clothes hes standing in, clothes, bag etc all purchased in USA. Make sure you take off the heavy luggage tag as soon as you get the bag off the conveyor belt. The overweight baggage charge can normally be negotiated on the gate "if" you get a nice check in woman or man.

are you sure you will be able to pick this part up when you are over there. i have just come back from the USA and i was trying to get some perrin stuff in the end i just got the people to send it to the uk. plus dont forget if you buy in the USA they will add their TAX as well so that will bump it up a few £££, VAT and DUTY is more dependant on which courier service they use, say for example if they use DHL your gonna get stung with charges

america is such a huge country, the closest place i could see for my stuff was over 2 hrs drive !!! are you sure the item your buying is close to you as well !!! i bought a 2nd intercooler from someone in the USA and he posted it to me, although i didnt get charged any duty i have been told that you are still liable for duty on 2nd hand products its the luck of the draw if you pay or not

I replied to a similar topic recently, my brother had a Cannondale frame shipped over, it was declared second hand and therefore he didnt have to pay the import duty. Not sure about the tax.

Checked out the location Steve, and it's where we're going anyway, so no issues there, i would only be buying this item in order to make money, and for what i would make i don't think it's worth the effort in retrospect..... but then if it went for a lot less than a grand $ it would maybe be worth it after-all.... We'll see........

Bored customs guys at T1 this afternoon and last friday, and same for T4 last week- where they were nowhere to be seen- a er....friend.....had £3000 of cd players in his hand luggage and was crapping his pants about getting stung for duty last week coming from the states. No worries in the end- a few bits of hassle at JFK with their security, but nothing a quick scan didnt sort out.
Work out the worst case scenario with having to pay the tax and how much it comes to. If it is still cheaper (and i bet it will be) then do it and consider it a bonus when you ddont have to pay the duty.
Not like you are smuggling vast quantities of crack or anything daft now is it.
Just stuff it in a case and dont stress
