IMHO Cala D'Or has been declining slowly but surely over the past ten years - it also has really limited beaches compared to other resorts. If your girly likes the beach the best one is Cala Mondrago and that is a bus ride away in a National Park - very pretty but gets very busy.
Alcudia has miles and miles of great beach - lots to do - a little characterless tho.
Puerto Pollensa which is a little further up from Alcudia has a lovely beach - less windy than Alcudia - a characterful if small town - nice small hotels. Less 'high rise'.
Between Alcudia and PP there is a great kite/wind surfing school and a **** load of onshore wind during the day.
All of the resorts above are English friendly. Cala D'Or has Eastenders playing in every bar - PP has it but only in a couple of 'English Bars' in the back streets.
Enjoy your holiday.

Puerto Pollensa definitely. It's got a very long beautiful tree-lined promenade, a lovely village square, lots of very good restaurants, and is within easy driving distance of Alcudia. It's exactly as you would imagine the perfect Mediterranean sea-side resort IMO.
We stayed in a villa in Pollensa last year, this is the old town and is about 10 minutes drive from Puerto Pollensa. There are lots of very nice villas available to hire in the area through www.jamesvillas.co.uk
