Default Surround sound and Sub Woofers

A while ago my brother bought one of those "all in one" surround systems and is now steadily upgrading.. problem is the sub has standard speaker cable attached, how can this be connected to the standard sub output on his new amp via a standard sub cable? can this be done with connectors or something or not?

It probably means his sub is passive and the new amp has a normal sub out that requires an active (amplified) sub.................
