Poker chip set

Poker chip set
I'm arranging my first poker night next month (we're all new to the game) and knowing there's a few seasoned players here, has anyone got any recommendations of sets to buy?
I don't want to spend a lot but it may become a regular thing so would like something that will last.
I've been on ebay and there's quite a choice.
There's going to be upto 8 people playing so will a 500 piece set be enough and is it worth getting a tabletop? Also anything else that I might be forgetting
Thanks In Advance

Asda sell some good thick plastic chips, we bought something like 200 chips, good quality for people who dont want the real deal, they only cost about a fiver. can buy the big cases of like 1000 chips etc ofr something like £25.

I'd go for Micro Chips, they're ready and seconds and really nice if you put salt, vineger and ketchup in the box and give it a really good shake!
ps Sorry! bored on a Friday!

I recently played with a Texas Hold'em set that came in a small steel briefcase. Think it was £14.99. It was entirely adequate (had a beize tablecloth too). If you're a serious gambler you might want to go OTT with a proper table, guns, etc...

Don't forget your heavies for when someone doesn't pay up
You'll also need a visor, single dangling down light and plenty of cigars and neat spirits.

I spent a little bit more and made sure I got 12g chips so they make a good noise
I also much prefer numbered chips ie. $5, $25, $50, $100 rather than just colours otherwise people always seem to be asking
"how much is the green chip" arrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhh
I want to then smash them in the face
I got a World Poker Tour set off fleabay cost me £40 quid and I am delighted with it.

Yes, numbered chips are better
Although if you just use the coloured ones you can make the values up... Doesn't have to be numbers, could be "favours"...

I'd get urself to asda mate, the set they sell for about £8 is top notch. 7.5g chips - good value and quality for starting out. But if you want the real Vegas feel get 11.5g chips i've just "upgraded" to them - they do feel nice

Assuming you're playing for real money I always preferred to play with notes and coins and used to call at the bank for a few bags of quid and 50p coins before a game. Makes the pots much more exciting, alive and tangible when you can see a nice wedge of cash in the centre.
