Default SONY BRAVIA

Looking for a new LCD TV and had the Sony Bravia 40" in mind.

Anyone on here got one of these or anyone comment if it is any good etc.. or recommend better option for same sort of price.

Cheers.

I do. The S isnt particularly special but the V is highly regarded (5stars in the new What HiFi); the W is the same as the V with a better internal amplifier. I have the W but Id usually recommend the V to anyone looking to buy, however; Empire Direct have knocked about £800 off the price of the W model and theyre now selling it for a few pounds more than the V; you cant go wrong!

I looked at the Bravia (V) next to a Pioneer Plasma (43 XDE) in John Lewis the other day - both on broadcast tv and a dvd, and the Plasma was so superior it threw mr into complete confusion. I was al set to buy the Bravia but now think I may get the Pioneer instead. Anybody else got a view ?

Cheers, think I will go for the V model.

Just need to find a stand for it now as it will be in the corner of the room. Anyone recommend a good supplier for these type of stands?

I think a good plasma will always be better at the moment until they manage to reduce the response time on LCD screens to an appreciably lower value. It shows up on moving images.

It depends on the screen Les; the KDL-V40 is the match of any gas plasma Ive seen. I have to say that if I was spending my own money though; Id have gone for a high resolution plasma as itd have been well under half the price.....

Get an LCD projector and a 2mtr wide drop down screen...The most awesome home cinema experience you'll ever have...no TV comes close...your wife/GF might hate it though cos it somehow crosses the boundary of being 'an essential' to being 'a toy'

An 'lcd' projector will have more shortcomings that a large TFT television, due to the size of the panel used; and it will show all of the imperfections that a TFT television does, but theyre even easier to see.

GC8

does the V model have a slot for sony memory card?

I have read some reviews which say it does but it is not included in the spec from Sony.

Cheers.

Agreed, the only thing that comes close to a Pioneer Plasma IMO is a Panasonic Plasma, after these 2 sets then Id consider LCD but even then it would be only contending with a few other plasmas.

It has what Sony describe as a 'PC Card' slot. Whether this is a PCMCIA/CardBus slot or not Im not sure. It holds a 'Conditional Access Module' into which you fit a viewing card; such as Top-Up TV. I have a Bravia W rather than a Bravia V, but its similar, with an upgraded amplifier.

I was expecting to find a VGA port too but it appears that this is only available on the cheaper S model. I havent seen a Memory Stick slot on any Sony LCD televisions.

Im not sure how to reply to that; it seems pretty obvious... An LCD projector shines a very bright light through a very small TFT panel. Because this is small image quality can not be as good as on a decently sized LCD television. The second issue, which is compression artifacts and macro-blocks will be exaggerated due to the size of the (lower quality) projected image. DLP offers an improved image, but the large image will always show all faults.
