Regrinding a knife blade?
Snapped the tip off my Sabatier carving knife, so now there's a flat spade end about 8mm wide. It's a stainless one.
I've a basic motorised grindstone (dry) in the garage, with what I would say is a fairly coarse stone on it. Can I just regrind a new tip on the blade? Or should I be careful about overheating the metal etc? I remember bits about "temper" but don't remember much (except not to lose it when holding a sharp knife )
Thanks for any advice.

Yes, be careful about overheating the metal. It won't take much grinding on such a thin piece of material. Basically, if the metal gets hot enough to give a yellow, brown or blue colour to the metal, then you've affected the temper. If you see one of these colours when you're grinding and you allow the metal to cool down naturally, then the metal will be annealed - i.e it will have lost the hardness that allows it to keep its edge.
If it was me, I would grind the blade gently at 90 degrees to the stone to regain a decent shape, then do the rest on an oilstone.

Did much the same with a kitchen knife, it's now back to shape after regularly sharpening it on an oilstone.
I have to warn the Mrs when I do knife sharpening, or she cuts herself
Does anyone else on here sharpen Stanley knife/scalpel blades too? I think I must have Scottish blood...........and before all the Scots start, that's meant as a joke

Thanks Bubba. IIRC, if I see one of those colours I then need to stick it in cold water, so it doesn't anneal.
I'll have a go at regrinding it but will take it very slowly.
Don't have an oilstone
alcazar - ye dinna ken! (and other Hancockisms...)
