Question Just How Bad Is Coca Cola / Pepsi For You ?

I drink a can of normal "full fat" Coca Cola every day. If I was to cut this down to say, one or two cans a week, would I see much in the way of weight loss ?

Thanks.

Not sure about weight loss, but it does have a lot of sugar, makes little kids go crazy and hyper , id cut it out totally and use orange juice or others, along with some good training u should see the results, but u will need to take into account other factors of which there are many...

Yes it would help,

IIRC can of coke contain 5-6 TABLEspoons of sugar! (35g for coke 40g for pepsi)
And it is correct that diet coke is worse healthwise - long term.

Be prepared for sugar lows mid-day though in the first few weeks. But once your body gets over it you should find it less of a problem to cut the stuff out of your diet.

I've done the same myself - used to drink 2-3 cans a day. Now down to 2 to 4 cans a week, and feel better for it. I guess my weight loss though is mainly due to the reduction in Overall food intake, rather than cutting out one single thing.

Eating less bread, or going for pita bread as an alternate is also a very good step to help with weightloss (plus a good excuse for a kebab ).

And beer is very fattening

So me switching from Guinness to a Vodka and Diet Coke mixer sounds like a bad idea healthwise...?

Back to the drawing board....

My mate works for Coca-Cola in Hammersmith and he knows what exactly goes in terms of sugar.

CocaCola is 6 teaspoons in a can, but disturbingly there are 12 teaspoons of sugar in a 500 ml bottle of Oasis!!! He only drinks water, wonder why?

The diet rots your teeth even more with all the acid in!
The sweetner Aspartememess (SP! is unclear regarding its long term health risks- cancer is the main risk.

I tend not to drink the junk stuff, but admit I do drink alot of Red Bull type drinks during exam time and gym periods.

Diet Pepsi and Diet Cola have around 1 cal per 100ml. In terms of watching your weight they are little different to drinking water! In fact, the caffine would likely raise your body's metabolism were it not for the fact the aspartame probably lowers it again. Anyone drinking 7 cans of 'normal' coke a day that switches to diet coke and makes no other change would see a difference over a year.

However, to say diet coke, etc is as good as water because its basically zero calories is very misleading! The acids, sweetners, chemicals and god-knows-what else isn't good for your body.

Funny you should say that about oasis?

I have 1 here sat right in front of me.

Only 25kcal per 100ml. Fruit juice is about 60kcal along with fizzy drinks!

If it is so high in sugar then why the low calorie count compared with the other drinks?

Does say 6 gram of carbohydrate and 6 grams of which sugars? What the **** does that mean?

Hmmm, I was told it was tablespoons.

So thought I'd double check:

Teaspoon = 4grams
Tablespoon = 7grams

330ml of Coke = 35g = 8.75 teaspoon = 5 tablespoons.

Eiether way, it's bad

I use to be hooked onto coke aswell but learned from one of my friend just how bad it actually was. Try putting a small piece of mean inside a glass of coke and leave it in overnight. I stoped dringin coke for around 6 years now and If I do ever have a try then find it tasting like disgusting rat wee

Doubt it buddy seeing as a mans reccomended calorie requirement is 2500 calories.

A pint of beer has around 300 calories so a drinking bender lasting 10 pints and you can see why you get a beer belly! Along with the normal food intake during the day with a few bags of peanuts and a kebab at the end of the night and your speaking 6000 calories!

A can of coke has around 50 kcals per 100ml so around 170 calories per can! No where near as bad as a pint.

1400 calories in a big mac meal .....

Is it a wonder why we are a nation filled with fatties

Don't move on to fruit juice either - most have huge amounts of sugar in as well. Better to eat the fruit instead.

At least is natural sugars usually - better than the refined sh*t added to fizzy drinks. Sugar is not to be feared as it is a source of your body's energy. Like all things though it should be a clean natural source and in moderation and balance with other food/energy sources.

How bad is it ?
I used to work with a guy that drank a bottle of Diet Coke each day.
He has now been medically retired (35yrs old) and has a bag to do his business in ! Nice !
The medical staff that worked on him put the blame on the Coke he used to drink. It had just eaten away his insides !!

Normal Coke is THE best cure for stomach upsets / trots ever.

Just stir it so it's not as fizzy, sorts you right out. Kills all the nasty flora in the gut ... and probably most of the good flora too

letdown, Jaybird, you know what I mean more than 60% of water in the drink lol

Saying that I do have about 3 cups of Tea a day with 2 sugars. Thats not gonna be any good for me, I did cut it out in the summer and felt great for it although now winters here and my working environment is cold Im back on it.

If nothing else changes, and your weight is currently stable then you would see some weight loss. If you are currently gaining weight, then would probably slow down weight gain.

Roughly speaking - for every 5000 calories less you put in than you burn, you will lose about a pound of fat. So if your weight is completely stable now, and you cut out 5 cans of coke a week (call it 900 calories) then should lose about a pound every 5 weeks.
These figures are based on a roughly averaged size person, doing a roughly average amount of exercise, and on a roughly normal calorie intake.
