The start of every year sees the arrival of the Quadrantids meteor shower. You can always be guaranteed a fine display that may reach up to 100 meteors per hour on the late evening of Tuesday 3rd January. The waxing crescent Moon will have set by the time the shower gets going leaving a nice dark sky. The whole shower is active from the 1st to 6th of January, giving you plenty of chances to see some of these bright fast meteors.

dont know what time the moon sets though?

could be wrong, but I dont think a telescope will be much good for looking at meteor showers, but you should get a great view of Mars

Good luck with the telescope, even binoculars are great enhancements to the human eye, but just make sure your neighbours know you aren't perving!

I have been watching the ascension of Venus each night now for about two weeks (very bright, roughly 220 degrees in the SW direction) and there are numerous man-made satellites to scan with a scope.

I saw a UFO once when doing an all night fishing session in the hills about here, a very odd experience, the bugger just stopped dead in the night sky and then accelerated away at a right angle to his original trajectory. I also had a witness but no photos as it was completely unexpected.

K.

Have fun.

Just a white light in the sky mate, I was using the naked eye only. There were no coloured lights on it that I could see and the speed of it was gobsmacking. It was probably some US test plane operating out of Machrihanish rather than ET I'd imagine, but who knows?

Really weird though and a bit scary when you are surrounded by trees, in the dark and have a five mile walk home to do in in the wilderness!
