Any Plumbers in - Toilet not flushing!!!
Anyone got any advice - Our toilet is not flushing - You have to repeatedly move the handle up and down to get it going and it seems to have got worse and is very difficult to flush at all. I have a photo but dont seem to be able to attach it!!!!
There is plenty of water in the toilet tank but it just wont flush - Anyone have any ideas of how I could go about fixing it.
Cheers

Flap valve/diaphragm. If you're lucky, unclip the main assembly, if you're unlucky you have to drain it and unscrew it from the bottom. If no shops open, get a sheet of plastic of similar thickness from say food packaging, cut it to shape, and replace.

Take the lid off the cistern. Have a look at the inside where the lever is, there should be a wire linkage coupling the lever to the flush mechanism. Check this is attatched ok, and that the section it lifts is free to move. If you can get access to it, see if the valve will lift up by hand and flush the bog. If not, then the valve has mybe failed and needs replaced.

I have just had a good look in the cistern and I think it works by pulling a rod which causes a siphoning action and kind of pulls the water round a bend and into the toilet - There is a seal between the rod and the hole it passes through and it is basically non existant. When I drain as much water out as possible and pull the rod the water comes through the hole with which the rod passes - Does that make any sense?
Is there any easy fix for this?

I have no idea how to get to the diaphragm - I presume the diaphragm is the bit which forces the water round the bend causing the siphoning action?
How do I get to it?

Get yourself to b&q, tell a shop assistant your troubles and they will give you the appropriate part you need for less then a tenner. It happened to us, you get a replacement unit and simple instructions. Just make sure you turn your water off otherwise you will end up with a flooded bathroom like we did

Depends on the cistern - if it is close coupled - i.e. directly connected to the pan then you need to unscrew the cistern from underneath, otherwise just tie the float up so the cold water doesn't pour in and then remove the cistern by unscrewing the big nut.
If the cold feed has a stopcock use it, otherwise drain the cold tank in your loft or wherever.
Disconnect the cold feed and the overflow pipe and then lift off the cistern, the siphon will unscrew from underneath. Replace it with one from B&Q etc for about £8.
Use some ptfe tape on the cold water feed when you reassemble.
