ALMOST EVERYONE
And its the tight ar5ed UK's fault ! most people now buy on price rather than quality, and fail to see that you can get something better by paying more for it - they just assume a handmade suite is a 'rip off' because it costs more than something from DFS that looks similar.
A lot of this is the medias fault for coming up with the whole 'rip off Britain' thing in the first place - by comparing the UK to markets like the USA based only on price, and not on market size, taxes, cost of living, wages etc... They seem to forget the fact that the UK is about average in terms of product costs when compared to the whole world ( look at prices in Japan, Switzerland, Scandinavia etc.... ).
Without getting into too much of a rant, this is one of the main reasons manufacturing in the UK has died - we used to have a reputation for producing quality products - yes, they were expensive, but in the long run were often cheaper as they'd last a lifetime.
Something a lot of people fail to realise is that all this crap thats made in China and India now isnt only cheap because labour costs are low, they are also lashed together from the cheapest materials possible and are designed to have a very short life and be replaced when they wear out or break rather than being repaired.
You cant really blame the retailers either, to stay in business they have to buy in this rubbish and sell cheap - if they dont, one of their competitors will, and they'll get the sales.

Like you say Britian has always had great quality production and it still does ,you have to know where to look and you also pay a premium for them when you find them. The likes of DFS are for the masses and thats what the masses want these days.I think thats what living in a democracy is all about, choice. And for you to blame the "tight arsed Uk",well if thats the way you feel maybe you should be in a different line of work.

It is rip off Britain though. But it is politically fueled, not public/consumer.
Just now we get over priced crap instead of massively overpriced "adequate" crap
In a viague nutshell without the complexities:
High minimum wage has killed UK industry, high wage is needed due to the high living costs, and high taxation and levys on companies forcing them to charge more to cover costs. Government can't lower incomes as it has caused an unstoppable sprial (until the next recession - cheers Bliar), it also has decided to "help" the workshy "minority(!?!)" thus increased taxation, so industries fork more out, resulting in higher consumer charging to cover it....consumers are UK public, and so need more money...therefore need higher wage, more strain on industries to provide it...therfore they charge the public more...or go into liquidation, or move abroad.
To cap it all, industry exportation is minimal....not many other countries in the world buy UK processed, made and built products...and if they are - it is not a UK owned company (more likely US, German or Japanese owned - guess where the money flows - out but not in ).

Comments above re Chinese goods are mostly true but the quality is improving by leaps and bounds and it will only be a year or so and they will dominate the manufactured goods market.

I have to agree with some of the comments above being invloved with importing, wholesale and retail things have changed a lot over the last 5 years.
I would say a minimum of 90% up to 95% of people want something that is cheap but looks good. People did use to pay top money for quality items such as TV's, Furniture and then keep them for 10 years plus
Now people want cheap, and as long as it does the job for 6 months to a year they will throw it away and buy the newest latest model.
i nearly fell off my chair when I read a post on here a couple of months back, some one had bought a Plasma (cost was £1200 to £2000) and it had blown up after only 13 months! He was preperered to go straight back out and buy another one, TVs used to last 10 years at a minimum!
People want Cheap, Cheap, Cheap, Cheap, Cheap, Cheap and Cheap
Forgot to add Cheap stuff from China is not going to last forever, there economy is booming and they will all soon be upgrading from bicycles to BMW's, Africa will be the next manufacturing capital ( a few years to go but it will happen, the countrys just need to be stabilised and governed properly, cheap products need cheap staff to make them!)
