Default Road Charging Scheme - How likely?

Reading today about the new Galileo European GPS type satellite system. One of the motivations behind building it is apparently to support possible future road charging schemes.

I am not in favour of such a scheme because I am sure it will result in the motorist paying more - as if we don't contribute our fair share to the treasury already . I also think there will be problems with people finding ways not to pay and can see them then deciding to expand the system to monitor speed and so on.

How popular is this idea? I can't believe there is a lot of support for this and how likely is it to go ahead? Suppose they are claiming it's necessary to deal with congestion - price people off the roads?

I believe it's very likely, unless those of us who both (a) know and (b) care about it take action. Please take the time to read through some of these previous threads, and write to your MP expressing your views.

Do you honestly think no other Party will carry on what previous governments start.
One Party is as bad as the next, and I wonder if they are not just puppets by a higher party. (conspiracy theory I know) they run the country as they seem fit not how the mass see it

Tried the 'these' link but got no matches?

I don't even know why they entertain the idea of such a scheme when 95% of people appear to be against it - I thought a democratic government was by and large supposed to take note of the populations views.

I wonder how they will ensure everybody complies and has these GPS devices fitted all year around should they go ahead with the scheme.

the government is only democratic in so far as how its chosen (dubious even then)...!

of course we have very little if any say in what happens because the govt obviously knows best for us what we want...!!!

Well, Bliar will take the view that the majority are out of step with his views so he'll carry on regardless.

England a democracy(?) - you're having a laugh, right?!

Sorry, the search worked for me for a while but I guess there must be a timeout. Here are the results I was looking for, they make for pretty grim reading
