Neon Kits etc

Neon Kits etc
On the way home tonight, I spotted a car, about three cars in front, with a purple neon light mounted around the tailpipe.
Now I might be being dumb, but surely this is illegal? I was told by the Police some years ago, that the with the exception of a reversing light, all rear facing lights should be red. The car I was driving back then, had a light mounted in the door, and the one I had been supplied with had white lenses in. The Police had pulled in behind me, watched me get out, and then had a quiet word and told me to get them changed (which was duly done by the manufacturer)
Any thoughts??

The copper was wrong, otherwise indicators would be illegal.
Having said that, I think coloured light can be visible as long as the source isn't, or something like that. So truck drivers often have a red light on in the cab, you can see the red light from the front, but the actual light bulb itself is not forward facing, so it's OK. Blue washer lights are a no, no I think.

nope - they get away with the blue washer lights - you cannot show a 'rotating' blue light - as washer jet neons are static they are legal, but if, for example, you had blue neon tyre valve caps they would be illegal due to their rotation.....
