Default SKY Tv, its stopped working

The missus complained that some of the channels went funny, stuttered and pixellated so I rang Sky, the lady suggested I returne using a hidden menu, services then 0, 1, select, now the thing has no channels and they want to charge me for an engineers visit !

I told them I wanted to bin it, then I waited for 20 minutes in queue and got bored.

So is there any way to fix it, all it does is say its getting the channels then sits there waiting for something.

I had a message on mine about a week ago saying some sort of major fault. I unplugged it at the wall for about 10 mins then plugged it back in. At first it wouldn't turn on so i left it then after about another 10 mins tried again and it worked fine. Have you tried this ?

Hmm, it just started working after some fiddling, dont know why why is always the most annoying way of 'fixing' something as I will be expected to repeat it.

We are having some "weather" at the moment so a weak signal will make them play up.

My check list:

Sometimes the boxes do overheat (especially when in a cabinet or with other a/v stuff piled ontop or underneath), so half an hour too cool off usually cures that one.

Missing channels, or dodgy/stuttering pics on certain channels is often a badly aligned dish or LNB on its last legs (which will fail completely eventually).

Finally the box could be duff, or associated wiring (rare).

If you want Sky to sort it - call Cancelations. Or find a reputable independant satelite/aerial specialist who usually charges half the call out rate. Or DIY and buy the bits off eBay for a pittance of what sky charge

Or as said above, unplug it for a few mins then plug it in again. Works for us every time.

I've had this problem plus many other hiccups over the years with my Sky box. The 'unplug it - plug it back in' trick has always sorted it out.

the £60 call out is for a local company to come and fix it... anything upto 14 days!!!!!

Just threaten to cancel your subscription and you will get a replacement box or any other part that is required for free. They are desparate to keep your custom. It works, I have done it. and when I was a self employed tv engineer, most of my sky customer use to do it, thats why I stopped repairing sky stuff. You cant compete with free repairs

My Sky+ does things like that. The latest thing is recording programmes on its own - Sky+ planner is empty and all of a sudden the little red recording light comes on ..... Or it says I'm recording two programmes already and won't record what I want it to. I record a programme that it says requires 3% of the space and lo and behold it says I've only got 93% left. Or it says the thing is full when I've only recorded about 15 hours worth of programmes. All Sky will say is reset it - which means I lose the programmes I want to watch.

We had this problem for a long time..At first we had the box replaced and it was ok but then the problem came back so they changed the box again blaming static as the cause..Again the problem came back but we noticed we would lose more channels or suffer breakups when it was windy..Another engineer went on the roof and said the connection was loose on the dish, probably due to the fact it was on a pole rather than a secured bracket. Not had anymore problems since although we did have sky+ installed on wednesday so I hope he tightened the connectors properly..
Don`t know why they say 14days for a call out...I ordered sky+ friday evening online and they came out on the wednesday to do it...
