It becomes harder and harder to put the right amount in your car. You have £20 in your pocket £19.96, 97, 98, 99, 01 .....bollards ....... now what do you do? Hope they let you off?

We give fuel companies enough money why cant they invest in some tech mology, you put how much money you want to spend into the machine and it does it for you. Cant be that hard now can it, other countries seem to manage it .........waxnkers.

Dare I suggest, use a credit card? Get one with cashback, and not only do you not have to pay for your fuel straight away, it's actually cheaper than using cash.

Have to agree with Gary on this one, it is very annoying and I always wonder why they cant automate it.

Another idea is a sort of "redial" function. I usually put £20 in, and often notice that the person before has also put £20 quid in. Would be good to put the nozzle in the car then press "Repeat" and it puts £20 in again.

It just hasn't become popular here. In America all the pumps will dispense the amount of fuel you enter. This was a requirement as you have to pre-pay in most petrol stations.

Why cant you have the choice to do either? Dial in what you want, £20 etc or just fill it up and pay for what you use as now.

I struggle and im reasonably able ( no comments) I can just imagine how an 80 year old would find it.

Is anyone else old enough to remember the Not the Nine O'Clock News sketch where someone's carefully filling his car up at 4.97, 4.97 1/2, 4.98, 4.98 1/2, 4.99, 4.99 1/2, 5.00, and he carefully extracts the nozzle, holding it up to catch the drips, is about to replace it in the holder - then the cashier notices and stabs a button and the reading jumps to 5.00 1/2

Spose it's funny now as we can't imagine only putting a fiver in the tank

stop at 19.98 - put the 2p in your glove box. Next time try to stop at 20.00. If you overshoot by a penny or two you know you have it in the glove box. I try to go over about 2-3p anyway. If they ask for it say you will have to drop it in as you couldn't get the pump to stop. I reckon save about £1.50 a year doing this

I Haven't paid for fuel for years. I just stop at every petrol station and put the nozzle in my tank from each pump in turn and manipulate the hose to get all that free petrol that sits in the hoses .

I liked the Not the 9 oclock news sketch (I think it was) where the petrol pump attendant had a switch that tripped over the .01 on the unsuspecting punter .

They've more important things to spend their money on than pandering to those punters with poor hand-eye co-ordination .

I think I must be missing the point on this one. Ever since I stopped being a poor student, I've never bought petrol in round quantities, nor have I ever known in advance exactly how much I'm going to buy. I just put the nozzle in the tank, hold it open until it clicks off, then pay for it by card. At Tesco now I don't even have to go to the kiosk, just swipe the card through the pump and fill up.

If you prefer for some reason to always pay by cash, why not just make a point of putting in, say, £19.95 worth? So what if you get a few coppers in change?

Pre-pay would be a dreadful idea; suppose you pay for £45 worth but only get in £40 before the tank is full. At best you have to queue up again for your change. Worse still would be if you queued up to pay £40, then again for another £5, then again because you only got another £4.37 into the tank and have 63p to collect. What a waste of time.

The only time to ever buy petrol £20 at a time is if it's not your own car.

There are plenty of people who still put £20 in, me being one of them. Much of the world makes it easy for you to do that, but not here.

There's a few stations with a plate at the till with coppers in. Use it when you overshoot or leave your unwanted coppers in it for others.

Go to Esso, they have a little dish on their counters that says "Penny Dish - don't worry about the odd penny, help yourself" to cover just such eventuallities.

I just fill mine up every 2 to 3 weeks or 600 miles (A4TDI ) then pay with debit card and tesco clubcard , never need any change

In the late sixties there used to be pumps here where you could do exactly that - any combination of pound(note)s and fivers. If I remember rightly, they were Supercortemaggiore garages. There was one just outside Ongar. They were the only ones that did it though and the idea just didn't seem to be very popular.

What I really want are those pumps where you flip the switch so you don't have to hold the gun while you fill up. They are there but never enabled to work. When you have a 20 gallon tank, you notice these things

They used to be enabled, but not any more (in this country) I suspect the HSE have had something to do with it.

The tyre pressure guage at my local BP station is cool, you set the pressure you want, whack the gizmo on the valve and it sorts everything else out for you and beeps when it's done!

I just use the petrol cap and jam it in the handle when i fill mine up. Just stand there and keep and eye on it without having to hold the pump handle.

We have one of those in a local BP. You can choose bar or psi - takes ages tu pump your tyres up to 30 bar

dunno - I gave up after about 10 minutes. went in to tell the chap in the garage that it wasn't working and it was stuck at 7psi - he came out, flipped the setting and it had actually reached 100psi. took ages to let the feker down again
