Question Car trade-in

Can you trade in a more expensive car than the one your buying?

Wife's looking to trade her CRV for a Corolla Verso, and the CRV book price is 3k more than the Verso's. How does it work, if at all? Do you get the car + 3k cash?

Ta.

Basically yes, but they'll try and squeeze the difference as no car dealer likes to give the customer money!

You'll not get the dripping from the end of a car dealers nose!!

You can, of course, do a deal either way ............. but be prepared to drop your trousers and bend over the salemans desk!!

The dealer would not do you a good price on the car you're buying, in addition he'll not do a good price on the car you are trading in. You lose both ways.

If anything, ask how much your local Honda dealer will pay (or even a 2nd hand car dealer). Best money to buy & sell private of course.

Example:
Car 1 £8k value as trade in
Car 2 £5k cost of new car

You could sell Car 1 for £9k and sell car 2 for £4k thus saving you £5k. Or you could do your trade in thingy and save £3k. How much is that extra £2k worth to you?

You'll get bottom price for your car. In 1997 I changed from a Cossie to a new Cinquecento Sporting. Got offered £14400 for the Cossie which was bottom book. I said I'd sell it privately. Next day dealer has my car advertised as "Due in" at £18495. Sold it for close to that. Try it privately. Good luck.
