Default Number Plates - more Labour red tape?

So in addition to making it now an offence to keep a car in a garage without telling Big Brother it seems I cant even buy a number plate online now. Well I can but its for 'show use'...

So after having to pay DVLA an £80 'transfer fee' so they cunningly profit from my misery of having my Scooby stolen a year ago [together with its number plate!] I have to go to a local spares shop and order an overpriced bit of perspex that will carry their name as an ad - for this makes it a 'legal' plate Just what I want on my RS4 'www.Speedy Dave's Autospares.com'... NOT!

The bureaucratic layering idiocy of this government is beyond me! What is the issue with the rozzers if I get a legal dimensions/layout 'show' plate albeit without the 'speedy spares' bit? Hardly likely to stop false plate issues for a bank robbery is it

I wait 12 months, get bounced between DVLA & Local Reg office several times, gather all kinds of pieces of paper [inc murder in getting a bit of paper from the previous insurance company telling me that my number plate is mine!] no-one found my Scoob, and now this. Ohh and its cold at night now too! Pah humbug!!!!

Whinge over!

I had a number plate made up at the weekend for my bike carrier.

On the list of questions asked by Halfords was inside leg measurement, fave' colour and what I had for for breakfast. Daft!

Well they have to restrict and control the supply of number plates, otherwise how can they force you to have an RFID enabled one going forward?

Had a nightmare with mine, at a local Halfords. Only needed a front for the MOT.

Bought my illegal black and silver ones no problem at all from a local sign shop

Makes me wonder how many MOT stations would definitely fail a car for having the correct spec plates which were not from a proper supplier?

e-Plate offers an array of benefits to government and commercial operators.
Yes, but no benefit whatsoever to the poor sap who has to pay for it.

When RFID become the norm, I shall have a set to run the car the 1/2 mile up the road to the MOT centre, then they'll be taken off again and the standard ones put back on.

I had to buy a new plate for my bike earlier this year after I got nicked for having one that was 'too small'.

I eventually got one from Halfrauds after telling them my life story, producing endless documents, household bills, etc, etc.

However, there is no kite mark or 'official' makers marking etc on it anywhere, it's just a plain bit of perspex. Are we saying that this is technically illegal then?

For those who want to know the actual requirements:

All number plates must meet the British Standards
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regm...quirements.htm

The bit relevant to this discussion seems to be:
The British Standard also requires that a number plate must be marked with the following information: -

The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)
The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)
The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The 'supplying outlet' is taken to mean a company whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)
A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters are optional additions.
There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regm...ritishstandard
So no Kite Mark required, just the BS Number?

Well, it fails to conform to any of those. I reckon I've got them 'banged to rights'.

Well you could go and have a chat with them and request a fully up to date plate with RF chip so that you can start to be monitored wherever you go. Or you could just walk away, keeping your receipts and then blame Halfords if you are ever caught

Yep I used them for my front and rear plates, no markings or kite on them,
so are mine illegal now then ??

Didn't have to supply any information regarding ownership of the car either.

I know my front one is as its only 3/4 size and have had several coppers point that out to me

If the plate was fitted pre-2001, I think you are OK, have a read of the links I posted above.

Well, the whole idea of putting it on was to comply with the law. If it fails to do that then I've been sold a sub standard item and I must be entitled to a correct replacement. (Think I'll pass on the chipped version though ) Time to check out exactly what they've supplied me with.

Youve got 2 choices then as I see it:
1) bend over and bite the pillow
2) say "f*ck 'em" and just get what you want from fancy plates*

*We accept no responsibility for your future incarceration and will no doubt lambast you for being a deviant criminal if you are caught

Glad its not just me on a Meldrew rant!

That trailer story just shows their rubbish bureaucratic logic!

Do I take it that I will be fine [no pun intended!] with online plates for my MY 2000 car then?
