airbags
My brother has a 1999 328i. Airbags went off at drivers door and windscreen pillar when he clipped a kerb. Is it possible to get them replaced using units from a breaker and get them fitted. Anyone done anything similar ?

I don't know whether its possible or not but I wouldn't want to trust the integrity of second hand Air Bags given you don't know their provenance. What happens if they don't deploy in a real accident? I doubt the insurance company would cough up in these circumstances.

In short NO..
you can replace the airbags per se,, but the module (ecu must also be changed) if a trigger condition has occured. it has one purpose, and thats to trigger the relevant units in the event of a shunt. once triggered, the unit cannot monitor all bags as some are deployed. the other and far more relevant question is do you want to take the risk?? even if you did fit a new bag, and managed to clean the car fully, the unit may not perform as it should, the next deployment could kill you.
If i recall once triggered a perminant trigger flag is raised it cannot be be reset buy normal diagnostic methods. its a black box item which means the manufacturer is the only one with the relevant systems to fully interrogate the unit.
I used to work for one of the brand leaders manufacturing these, they are perfectly safe in normal use, but in the wrong hands can be lethal.
Incedentally, how many of you have scoobs comming up to 12 years old or any car with an airbag for that matter??
did you know to maintain efficiency all the bags and ecu should be replaced at approx 12 years..
how many of us will stump that cost?

to deploy the two bags of that style, would involve as Les says some excessive forces, hence tey dont deply below apporx 25 mph, before i would even consider any form of airbaggery i would get the car on an alignment rig.
i hit a kerb at 40 , no bags , but rippled the roof/ A pillar
