Undertaking, or passing on the inside, is not actually illegal*. However, it could be construed as dangerous driving by the police, so it is not recommended unless:
You are travelling slowly
The speed differential between the cars is low
The traffic is queuing

I will cruise along in the middle lane laste at night when no traffic about- less lorry tracks so safer. But if someone is coming up behind me ( not likely ) I will move across into the other lane sure.
As for approaching someone who is stupid enough not to move across when traffic approaching from behind, one flash on the lights if they are lucky (not always), then it is undertake time.

odd that the person posting about poor lane choice is unaware of the laws of the road?

Good site, definitely the bane of my life when travelling on motorways. Richard Porters article in this months EVO about lane discipline in France is also spot on and very true.

Driving along the M56 at 5am this morning, completely deserted except for a Rover 25 in the middle lane and then a few miles later and Escort in the middle lane. What is wrong with these idiots? Undertook them both.

I hate these people with a passion, but I love playing games with them - I tend to over take them in lane three and then straight back into lane 1. If they do not move to lane 1, I reduce speed to let them overtake me and then over take them again in lane three and back to lane 1. I had to do this once 4 times before got the person to eventually move to lane 1. Very childish I know but great fun !
PS really tempted to buy one of the electric rolling signs for the back of the car with the mesage "observe proper lane discipline" - but then again I sure the people stuck in the middle lane are that un observant that they would not see it !

People hogging the middle lane on a relatively quite motorway drive me nuts But when it's busy I can't say I blame anyone for staying in the middle when, strictly speaking, they could move to the left.
Here's the reason - many times I have moved to the left hand lane and then had to wait bloody ages for someone to let me back out when I need to overtake a slower vehicle. After about the 3rd or 4th time of being wedged in I give up and stay in the middle lane. If you're going to stay in the middle lane at least be prepared to ease off and let someone in who needs to overtake.

They then when they ahve passed you slow down !! -- in the middle lane-- and your forced to pull back in the middle lane and then proceed to overtake them.. Tw*ts

If there is slow moving traffic then i wouldn't move across unless i'm able to travel in the inside lane for a decent amount of time, but as above yeah undertaking is amazing, one car to their left and one to the right and they still don't move, personally if i was being overtaken either side i'd probably think **** i should move over, but no the squatters won't budge, also another one from the inside lane to fast, then across there nose and back to inside. have that *******!!!!

And how about the irritating gits at junctions. Many's the time I've courteously moved to the middle lane to allow someone to join the motorway, only to have them then try and race me along the inside - or match my speed perfectly stranding me in the middle lane.

We don't have this problem up in Scotland.
Possibly because we don't have 3-lane motorways!!
(Well, to be strictly accurate - we do have 3-lanes on some motorways, but 95% of our M roads are 2-lanes only)

There was quite a funny related thread about this months ago and the best comment on there on how ppl deal with middle lane morons was along the lines of
"well what I do is to pass them, sharply pull in front of them, then drop into the inside lane..wait for a while slowing down until they have passed, then repeat the procedure until they finally twig. I did 10 laps around one guy before he finally got the hint !! "
Now that is class

I love the "Hog Lapping" game above, but then the real challenge is undertaking them then moving to lane 3 and letting them undertake you then undertaking them in lane 1 again. You tend to get fewer laps in before they twig this one.

damm, I might leave work early just to try and get some Hog lapping in
do you get points, prizes or is it simple personal satisfaction ??
(not related, but last night-non foggy night - was behind this numptie all the way home going at some dreadful speed..way below the posted limit.
any junction he stopped,i had to nearly stop myselfd when he pulled away as he was travelling so slow. wasnt tailgaiting him at all, just sitting back trying to gauge an opener when he decided that i was too close and turned on his fogs to warn me to stay back !!! well **** you mate thx for that. so slightly childish I know, but he enjoyed the full benefit of my full beam for the next mile )
t**t deciding he can tell me how and what speed I travel at
rant over

would you undertake if a police patrol car was in the vicinity though? I think you'd be chancing your arm. I would say it's a pretty grey area.
I'd be happy to have the law stated to me though, I don't have a copy of the highway code to hand at the moment.

Overtaking on the left is not an offence in the United Kingdom. However, all drivers are bound by our road traffic laws, and liable to prosecution for offences such as careless or dangerous driving. Enforcement of the law is, of course, a matter for the police who will make their decisions on whether to prosecute in the circumstances of each individual case.
As I thought - a pretty grey area.
