Its down to cars itself...not the fuel It only works on cars with active ignition control via a knock sensor. (assuming UK market cars...non of this dodgy Jap import rubbish )
No knock sensor or mapping for higher than manufacturers recommended octane = no difference.
Makes a huge difference on an old Jag XJS...but then the ignition is setup to run on 98 4 star ...95Ron makes it pink like crazy

Tesco 99 or Optimax goes in my Leon Cupra R all the time. Dealer put 95 in it once and it ran like poo. But mine has been remapped for it though....

Definate improvement on Super, but didn't the old shape have an ecu less capable? I remember threads popping up one here more than a Subaru in a Lake "how do I reset my ECU??" One of the advantages of moving to the Bugeye I thought.

The lower RON fuels will caused the ECU to retard the ignition so you lose the design performance. The danger with a turbocharged car is that low Ron fuels may also cause detonation which is an engine killer! Like No 3 big end failure!

The more the car is driven, the more averaged (and in essence, more accurate and safe) the mapping gets. This is how it masks various sensor (partial) failures, because the map is so averaged out, sensor variations no longer create any significant change, the same goes for fuel variations but to a much lesser extent. I belive it is/was part of a main dealer schedule to reset the ECU every main service - that is if they ever bothered. (but might explain the big bang after a service theory too ).

I run Optimax in my car as it's a better quality fuel. Not for pub talk stats and figures.
My car is a non turbo.
if I had a normally aspirated BMW 540i sport or something like that I'd use Optimax (or super) as well.
Do you use decent oil?? Use decent petrol then.

So we've learned that cars with ECU's that can take advantage of higher octane fuels actually do .... where's everyone been for the past 6 years?
Subaru has always recommended running the turbo cars on 98 RON because they perform better.
