Good luck for getting a new job, probably the worst time of year for it too as I experienced it exactly the same time 3 years ago.
Why do companies do it just before Xmas when its probably the most expensive time of year in terms of living expenses?

i got ****ed over a few years back about 7 days before christmas day
complete ****ter
all due to the "new" nissan primera not selling enough, 2 of us left from the original team, we knew one job was going, the other lad was there a few weeks longer then me, so i took my holidays, went back in for my final last 2 days and heard that both of us were being dropped
nice chrimbo that was
found a better paid job within a month so it did take the edge of it, but christmas was a bit "sketchy"
nissan uk rang me back up 3 times offering me my job back and i told them to **** off
i am a firm believer in that "things happen for a reason"

Good luck!!
What about contacting your old place? If you were a long termer then they may find something for you. Probably only worth doing this if times are hard as you obviously left for a reason.

Look on the bright side, you can now get a better job.
I was made redundant on the 1st of october. i start my new job on the 1st of december. there is always another job out there for you. just use the time you have off wisely.
I wasted a lot of mine laying on the bed watching futurama and lost i'm only now starting to make good use of my time
i've been done 3 times comming up to christmas now, so i am getting use to it

Whats happened to the so called great economy that labour is spounting about all the time - all i seem to hear is people being laid off all the time.
Ring up your old place (dont be proud and think your crawling back with your tail between your legs) and see if they can help you out.
Good luck mate i'm sure you'll get sorted.

Though, if you want some.... According to the published measure [ILO standard], unemployment in the UK is pretty low (4.7% for August) when compared to other countries and indeed previous decades. The buoyancy of the current economy means that it should actually be possible to find another job if something goes wrong with the current one.
I got made redundant in the UK 1988, which was a bad time to become unemployed - the rate then was over 10% - especially as interest rates had just doubled too up to 15%.
Good luck again to the original poster!

2.6 million "unemployed" on incapacity benefit, probably more before they carefully massage the figures. And as far as I'm concerned most of these "unemployed" will never work again. So Suresh, if these 2.6 million did decide to look for work, do you think there would actually be 2.6 mill UK jobs waiting for them? I'd say no as the UK is now a second rate service industry economy with "real" jobs having long since vanished. Government training programmes account for at least another million. Yeah, we're thriving all right.

Ignorance is bliss
Ahem. Labour switched to internationally accepted and comparable ILO standard when they came to power, to get away from the faked Tory figures which of course only included claimants and therefore excluded; those looking for work but not claiming, disabled of course, YTS (remember that?), and anyone else they felt like. I recall the Tories massaged the way the stats were measured to reduce the figures around *18 times* whilst they were in power.
For your info. Incapacity Benefit was introduced by the Tories in 1995. According to the official stats, 2.17Mio people were receiving such benefits in February of that year. The current figure (Feb 2005) is that 1.74Mio are receiving Incapacity Benefit. So unemployment really is lower, both according to the ILO-based figures and also your alternative view. Oh dear :
Doesn't matter, because it is actually good news for anyone who is looking for a job right now - which is of course what this thread is about!
