Question Views On I-Pods

It seems to be the way to go now; you can't beat vinyl for quality though!

I'm thinking of buying an i-Pod as a Christmas present and wondered what the Community's views were on choosing the best, current model?

I have a 20gb ipod, i dont use it much and cant really be bothered to sort out which albums i want on it (i have so much stuff) so jut have favourite songs on. Far better than a walkman/discman.

Theres so many differant types now though, like with phones. I suppose you have to remember that your buying an mp3 player and not some gadget that does everything with features youll never/hardly use!

Thanks Mate.

This is the reason I'm trying to sound things out.

I'm not sure which model offers the best value for money. It doesn't have to be "Cutting Edge" technology, just what's the currently favoured device.

I'm going to look at DVD players / Recorders next.

This could be a long search.

Nnnh.

I just got a 20gb Video Ipod in black. Nice bit of kit and reasonable value for £220 I think..
Very sexy though - really nice and thin and the screen is small but good quality and still watchable. Like the Nano's though it looks like it's gonna scratch easy so on the look out for a nice skin at the moment..

Debateable I suppose on the added value of having the video when there are much better video handhelds out there but as a bounus for not much more I think it's worthwhile...

I have 60 gb photo ( and despite 2500 songs plus hundreds of photos I have only used 10gb!!! So something like 20 GB should be plenty for anyone.)
I love the IPod (as I travel on business an awful lot).
Get one, got to allofmp3.com and download every album you ever wanted past or present at about $1.50 per album!! Incredible, legal site.

Have a 20Gb iPod. Ebay £155. Got around 900 tunes on it so far and plenty more space yet. Trouble is, Maybe its me, but all the stuff I put onto it from my PC is now no longer on the PC...Beware....copy first then transfer.
Silly old me.

PS: reason for purchase, to plug in to special car adaptor, instead of buying a multi changer / MP3 player.

Two choices really, the Nano in 4GB and 6GB, which are both solid state (no disc) or the proper Ipod itself (which now plays videos) I would go for the proper Ipod and depending on the budget choose the higher capacity one.

Thumbs up

Thanks Guys for the feedback.

The gift is for my 13 year old nephew. I allowed him to search last night and even he is confused as to which one he wants!

Now that we have some info a trawl around the shops awaits...

I pod mini - And think its great !
Only bought it to use on the plane and arond the pool on holiday last year, thought that when i came back it would be thrown in a draw and never see the light of day again.
But i then bought an I-trip and now listen to it in the car, infact CD's dont get used in my car any more.

The Apple site will tell you which versions of Windows are compatible. It not just XP that will work. Also check out USB requirements. dl

I have a 15Gb G3 iPod (Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Scoob99) and have found that it is really on the limit as far as disk space goes...but then I buy a couple of CDs almost every week so have quite a large collection. The iTrip is a good option for the car but I'm looking at buying a replacement head unit which has a dedicated iPod input as in the cities the iTrip doesn't work as well as I would like (too much interference from radio stations). As for the iPod itself, iTunes is a great piece of software and the iPod is the sexiest of all mp3 players. Buy one, you won't regret it...and then download goPod to unblock the EU volume limiter and unleash the power!

Ken, may I borrow your thread for a moment to ask the IPod experts on here the following. My son has a new 20 g iPod and we cannot load the software on either of the two PCs we have. Both Windows XP. One PC says "Windows Registery Error" and the other says "1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Error"

Any ideas?

I have got a 40gb 4th gen ipod and love it, its locked up on me a couple of times but found out how to do a soft reset, they are are just cool and have 101 accessories available. iTunes is very good too and syncs ipods with ease.

Have you found this and tried it? That may solve one or both of the problems.

Thank you very much Frosty. I got over the 1607 error by disabling the virus monitoring stuff but still have the Registery Error. Thanks, David

Unlikely - the normal iPod houses a hard disk to store the music, the Nano uses memory chips. There's no disk as slim as a chip.

I also just bought the Airport Express and that has got to be one of the best and most understated products in the Apple range.
