Default High Definition TV - I saw it today

I wandered into the local Sony Centre this morning just to have alook at the new TVs they have. Some of the staff were standing back admiring and chatting about one set in particular. It was one of their new 40" LCDs transmitting HD pictures from a satellite box. I was talking to the guy and he said they'd just had it installed. He said it was a European channel (there was an Astra symbol in the top corner) which was demonstrating HD. For anyone that thinks LCDs are no good (like I did), the picture was stunning. The detail was incredible. One scene showed a skier going through powder snow, and the screen had no problems keeping up with the speed of this, and the colours were very sharp.

When will HD be available properly here?

If you believe the masses here it'll be available next year, End of Feb IIRC theyre releasing a couple of channels (1 film and 1 sport IIRC) but everone whos gone mad on HD sets will have probably seen all the flims on DVD years before Sky show them so its only useful for sport IMO....

Id say your looking at about a year before theyre releasing more channels and it's probably gonna be another silly price ontop of what Sky already charge....

Forget about it and think about it when its actually out.

mmm HDTV, lovely. Alas when I came over here I didn't have too much cash, thus I didn't get a HD compatible TV, however, my boss did, along with a HD digital cable box (I have regular digital cable). We ran a few tests side by side, and I have to say that it's certainly worth the premium (which seems to be around 12 bucks a month for the service, so that's about 6 quid, which isn't bad really).

I think there are currently around 12 HDTV channels here, which isn't bad, and they cover the popular channels (Fox, Discovery, etc...)

It would be folly to buy a TV that is NOT HD Ready if you are buying now.

It's going to be as big as when Colour came in - and, yes, I remember it very well!!

I have seen the pictures, albeit from a PC source I believe, and they are as good as looking through a window!! Stunning!!

Why are we always two years or so behind the Americans, The first time i saw digital sattelite TV was in Canada about two years before Sky went Digital, it looks the same way with HDTV saw it in Canada this time last year on a projector setup. I have to say it´s stunning.

Like Pete says, as big as the colour revolution. LOL

Saw a 50" in one in the Sony centre in Milton Keynes, and the picture was of a deep sea diver, it was so good it was like looking at a fish tank.
Cheers

The BBC and ITV have been making all their dramas and recording top sporting events in HD for a while now so they can be sold abroad. For broadcast here they have to be downgraded for normal tv! The BBC will start broadcasts next Autumn. Bring it on!!
