Default who's eating my fish ?

tropical fish help needed . .

i've got a Juwel Vision 180 litre tank, had it for about 2 years.

i bought 10 neons the other day to brighten it up , but over the last 2 weeks 7 have disappeared ? ?

i thought i had community fish

1 x silver shark
1 x fighting fish
1 x gourami
2 x plecs
5 x harlequins
3 x zebra cories
2 x clown loaches
5 x mollys

upon closer inspection a couple of the mollies appear to be fin-nipped as well.

it could be that the neons have died naturally and then been eaten, but i've never seen this or found any remains.

any ideas ?

Iain

Silver sharks can be territorial but my first guess would be your gourami. What type is it, dwarf, honey, golden??

could be the fighting fish fella...

i had the same problem a few years back, you'll find most fish will have a nibble, due to their skin colour, most fish think its food and go in for the kill...

doubt you'll find any remains either..

I have to admit i would be surprised if it turned out to be your betta. They are also territorial and will definately have a go at them but for you to say that you have never found any remains at all from 7 missing fish would lead me think that they are actually being eaten pretty much in one go rather than dying and all of the tank mates slowly eating them...another thought..your neons arent small enough to get sucking into the filter are they?

When i have had similar 'disapperaing fish' when i was a kid it nearly always turned out to be a gourami...or tiger barbs! but as you havnt got any barbs then that is quite unlikely.

Is your gourami a golden by any chance?
Any of your fish noticable fatter?

i have a golden gourami and he's a bit of a ******* for eating other fish.
he won't touch slightly bigger fish, but loves to nip the fins of neons etc.
also keep a close eye on your mollies, when you have a few of the same species, ie leopard, saffron etc, they can shoal and become quite territorial. my mollies are giving my platy's a bit of a hard time at the mo.

hope that helps!!!

How big are your plecs? I had a huge fecking thing and at night (well with the light off) he used to bottom feed and scoop all the neons (sleeping apparently told by fish bloke) and eat them up (not in their nature but accidentally).

If they are small then i'd put money on the Mollies (I had nightmares with my black ones)

Nice tank btw I have the same in beech,

can see anything in that tank consuming 7 tetras in such a short time. (not alive ones anyway)

is that tank not a bit dinky for 2 plecs?

Is it a female fighter you have???

We had a male fighter then got a female fighter, we noticed the male had been bitten and was starting to get a fungus disease on it, it eventually died, we thought it was the angel fish so got rid and went and got another male fighter, same thing happened, so I sat for ages watching to see what fish went for him, and it turned out to be the female fighter, very strange seeing as a female and male would usually get on, so it could be your fighter, coz all the others you have listed should be fine as we have most of them aswell and have had no problems.

IPALMER

Please confirm if golden gourami or not. I have actually seen a golden within a couple of gulps actually completely consume small neons.

plecs are not very big.

if they get too big, it's a good excuse for a new tank !

they may appreciate some bog wood in there if theres none already.

They also like the odd pea or bit of lettuce. Whatever they dont eat in 24 hours though retrieve. I used to give mine a treat once a week and to be fair there was nothing i ever had to clean out.

Probably not mate after seeing the picture. However I'm having trouble identifiying it.
From the pic it could be a honey or a dwarf but certainly isnt a gold. The dwarf and honey are far less aggresive than the gold. It looks quite big for a dwarf but that might be water distortion...my guess is its a dwarf.

Check out this website. It may help identify it if you are unsure too.

Aren't fish fickle?? My plecs never liked cucumber! However if i gave them a pea all hell would break loose....on a fish tank type scale you understand.

Invalid link mate.

Im sure you are right and in which case means the gourami is almost certainly NOT the culprit.

Good luck in working out what is.

Cheers

We've had trouble before with neons eating each other (even in a tank of just neons), so that could be what's happend to yours.
