Gordon Browns missing millions - 8pm ch4 Dispatches tonight
Looking forward to this one!
Detail from the ch4 website on this docco
"Gordon Brown is the Prime Minister-in-waiting, heir apparent to Tony Blair. It's a claim founded on the reputation for 'prudence' he's enjoyed as Chancellor. He has been portrayed as an astute and masterly manager of our economy. But there is another side to Brown's economics which reveals a record of costly errors.
Economist Andrew Dilnot looks at where Gordon Brown policies have gone wrong &endash and the consequences for all of us.
Dilnot was centrally involved in the debate about UK economic policy in the early 1990s. By the time Labour were swept into power on a landslide election victory in 1997, Dilnot could already see serious flaws and regarded himself as 'the last sceptic in Britain'.
In the last eight years, Dilnot has seen much of his scepticism proved right, as Brown has steered the British economy from a budget surplus of nearly £20 billion into a budget deficit of over £30 billion. This £50 billion negative swing in our economic fortunes represents a cost of around £1,000 per year for every adult in Britain. And there's worse to come.
Dilnot embarks on a personal journey to uncover the expensive mistakes in Brown's economic policy which have led to failure to transform the health, education and transport systems, inequality going up not down, financial waste and the breaking of Brown's own famous 'Rules'. The consequences of Brown's misjudgements, Dilnot warns, are something we will all ultimately have to pay for."

The deficit and pensions are two areas where he has ballsed things up beyond belief which is why I don't think he'll make it as the next PM. Now I need to work out how to rest control of the remote from HI.

Recent figures released by the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI) have revealed that the number of people declared insolvent in England and Wales in the third quarter of 2005 has reached a record high .....................
............... if businessmen are cocking it all up - no wonder the tax receipts are down!!
It's about time people learned how to stay solvent and pay the taxes needed to fund the schools and hospitals!!
Hardly the chancellors fault!!!

However, I doubt you run your personal finances in the way our Chancellor runs those of this country.
I might be wrong of course, do you sell Lewis Bonds?

About time the great unwashed were told the truth, instead of the claptrap peddled by such as lewis.
Shame it's not on ITV1 - 2 and 3 where the real-thicky New Labour voters are to be found.

Yes, much blame can be laid at the feet of this Chancellor, for he has been quite happy to oversee a credit bubble for, up to now, it has fed his tax coffers.
Personal indebtness can only go so far and we are starting to see the unravelling of this.

Interesting fact that, "Under the Tories, after the 1997 election, Tax would have HAD to go up to 38%"
Labour held it to 37.5%!!!
FACT - you would have been WORSE off under the Tories!!!
The Tories tried to buy your vote in 1997, they failed miserably as we all know ... now, the cost is being picked up!!
It's a FACT I wasn't aware of ..... we are now paying for the Tories trying to buy your vote in 1997!! SHOCKING state of affairs!!
Well done Labour for taking the flack ................ if there was an election tomorrow, the popular vote would STILL return Labour, so, it has been noted - we salute you!!

That was quite shocking really, but also expected.
Just boils down to SPIN SPIN SPIN - what NL is all about.
"Oh no we've only got 8,000 new teachers when we PROMISED 20,000..... erm - I know! Lets classify trainee student teachers as teachers - that'll make up the numbers!!"

Brown said the Tories were going to put tax up to 38%. Since when is it correct to quote New Labour spin as fact?
New Labour propaganda seems to have put people like you into some sort of moronic semi-lucid type trance. Did nothing else sink into your well washed brain whilst watching the program? Are you completely oblivious to your surroundings?

Pete,
You are missing the point,i bet most people would sooner pay more tax to any government that spent it wisely than less tax to a bunch of monkeys that dont have a f--king clue how to control their finances.

You see just repeating something doesn't make it stick with those with an ability to analyse.
Might do with those who lack that capability.
Spin, PR, news management, these I can dissect.
Can you Mr. Lewis?
