If you can come across a copy of Tom Tom 5 (on eBay for £5 say), then a Mitac Mio 168 is a better alternative than both. Its a capable PDA with a built-in GPS receiver; less bulky than both, much much better than the Garmin and far more useful than the Tom Tom: and you can play Quake 2, watch video and listen to MP3s..... £210 delivered!

I think that this Mio is ****-hot; with the exception of the antenna its no larger than a small PDA, its got better software than the TTN, its a PDA too and its substantially cheaper.
