I'm sure he'll be well looked after.
Anyway, this is only the 2nd time he's resigned so I'm sure he'll be back with another cabinet job soon enough.
Bet his sons are fuming after selling those shares so quickly

No-one seems to care as to wether he was good at his job or not,its just fun for the tabloids and enemies of the Labour party.Ah well, replace him with someone who is less capable,i mean, its only work and pensions, its not like it has a real effect on our day to day lives.

There is rumoured to be a cabinet reshuffle coming before the end of the year anyway so I wouldn't be surprised if he returns in another cabinet post.

With ol' Blindie now gone does that mean we might see a reduction (albeit minute) in civil servants as he won't need his million and one helpers?..........
With arrogance like his there's no doubt he couldn't see it coming...........

Dear oh dear the blinkers remain firmly in place don't they Paulr .
Blunkett made some fundermental mistakes and mixed his work and home lives when he agreed to look over that particular aplication from a particular nanny of his mistress. He also had the 'issue' of rail tickets paid for by the govenrment (us in effect) he got for his but o fluff and forgot to pay it back - bad judgement
Then there is the shares he bought in the company which coude be a conflict - he should have reported voluntarily his directorship with that company before taking the position offered by Blair - Bad judgement
He just seems to keep making errors, like most government ministers mp's he has an enterage who are there to advise and guide. Perhaps it is them but ultimately he just makes bad judgement calls. Not what i want from a pensions minister and certainly a home sec as he was.
As for 'less able people' you are doing a disservice to a lot of other Labour MP's!

Paulr,
Maybe you don't think it is important, but in recent times it was considered necessary for ministers and party leaders to be men of honour who could be trusted to tell the truth and act in a decent and moral manner. I think it is well beyond the time that we should be getting back to that situation too.
It was felt that people in public life should at least be able to set a good example to the rest of the country. If you don't agree with that then you are well fitted to be a member of NL with Billy boy's strange collection of self serving, fawning band of rather queer characters who are prepared to sell their souls for any kind of advancement.
Was that fellow really good enough to do a proper job anyway?
Les

But remember Blair had just given him "his full support" so the writing was on the wall.....
As it happens I think he was mostly a hard working and intelligent guy but greed and arrogance got him in the end. Becoming a Director of that company was just ridiculous. dl

Why? All the work is done by the hordes of civil servants beneath him. A minister is just a figure head. Look how often governments have cabinet reshuffles. For instance, the rural affairs minister suddenly becomes responsible for e-commerce. Hmm...

After last weeks satirical and very amusing play on TV portraying Plunket, his trials and tribulations and what he had to say about some of his colleages including Cherry and the PM, I wondered how long it would be before he walked.
When I heard the news last night saying he had Tony Bliar's full support I new it was a prelude to his departure.
Arrogant and greedy I would conclude. Another New Labour plonker heads for a spell in the wilderness.
Book on when/if he comes back to the cabinet?
