Default Neck pain

Woke up early this morning with a sharp pain in my neck, however, I thought nothing of it and went back to sleep for an hour or so. When I got up, I felt an excruciating/sharp pain when I tried to tilt my head upwards and when moving it to the right. I've had painkillers all day and, while it's slightly better, there are occasions (like ten minutes ago when trying to walk down the stairs) when the pain returns worse than ever (only very sudden, but it hurts like hell).

I presume it will be down to sleeping awkwardly last night and it will eventually go away, but I'd like to know if there's anything I can do to perhaps speed up the 'recovery'.

Relax

Seriously mean it, don't tense up & try & retain normal movement. Easier said than done I know.

I've got a f'ked shoulder & this happens quite often, so that is what I try to do.

Hot water bottle wrapped in a towel over the back of the neck will help

Just in case it's still hurting:

2 x Paracetamol
2 x Ibuprofen
1 x bottle wine

I find that helps my back when it misbehaves!

(Oh - and check you weren't sleeping in a cold draft)

Max strength Ibuprofen gel (e.g. Ibuleve). Works wonders for me when I've woken up with a stiff neck. Never had the sharp / excruciating pain thing though, you may have a trapped nerve.
