What cutter you get depends on what you want to use it for - if you are planning on doing large graphics ( anything over 50cm long ) you need to spend a lot more as the cheap ones dont track well over long distances - for example, if you wanted to do the side logo on an Impreza rally replica, there are very few machines that will do this.

Also, avoid any of the small desktop ones that only cut 30cm widths - you want something that will take at least 610mm vinyl.

You can get cheap ones on Ebay for about £600, but TBH they are crap, and unless you just want to run off the odd graphic as a hobby, they wont last.

Proper cutters are designed to be running 8 hours a day every day and last years, and be accurate all the time, this is why they are a lot more expensive to buy.

Also you need decent software to run it from, which will cost around £500, and unless you can create vector artwork from scratch, the only designs you will be able to offer are the same ones everyone else can download off the web, so not very 'custom'

If you want to PM me with some more info on what you're planning and how much you have to spend I can give you some more info on what is worth buying.

P.S. would steer clear of anything from auctions as chances are it'll be completely shagged and pack up after a couple of months use !

there goes another business idea. was just going to be something to run in my spare time that i thought i'd be able to set up initially for about £500.

never mind back to the drawing board.
