Chopper on M4

Chopper on M4
Went up to London on Saturday, might have inadvertently strayed over 70mph, not sure ...
There was a chopper hovering in a stationary position just south of the M4 around J14ish, what was it doing there?
Surely, they can't measure speeds reliably from choppers, or can they...
Imagine how much that must cost, and therefore how many people they have to catch in order to fund it !!!
Hopefully I'm completely wrong and someone can enlighten me.

Therefore, anyone seen to be exceding 70mph will be greeted with a sidewinder missile (launched from the Apache helicopter). These are significantly harder to dodge than NIPs, and statistics also suggest that people are significantly less likely to complain on public forums after recieving a sidewinder.

They can work out your speed from a helicopter and I think you will find operating the helicopter for this is cheap! Mainly because if the Helicopter is chartered, like a lot are, it is contracted to do a certain amount of hours. Whether it does those hours or not the price is the same. Therefore if towards the end of the time period the helicopter has not flown the relevant number hours it can go and catch speeders for the number of unflown hours and the cost is nothing.
I have seen Sussex Police using theirs to catch speeders but they had cars on the ground to stop people after they have been caught from the air. So not sure they will send you an NIP.
