Question Low Energy/Long Life Light Bulbs...

Does anyone know a make of low enrgy/long life bulbs (60w equivilent) that are no bigger than a standard bulb? I need to fit some into the outside lamp covers, but all the ones I have are too long

Cheers

I've seen some Philips 6-yr? short ones. There are those with the bulb the same size as the normal bulb, plus the inch extension at the bottom, but now I've seen ones which have the inch plus a shorter than normal bulb, so probably overall the same size as a normal bulb.

Had the same problem as you - bought 4, took them home, they didn't fit. Had to take them back and change them

IKEA do a brilliant selection. Unfortunately they don't do bayonet fittings. The equivalent wattage is slightly dimmer than an incandescent bulb, too - whatever they claim.

I went through Philips' site, eventually got to this. I'm talking about the "Softone ESaver 6 Year T-shape". Not sure where you can buy them, but they exist. HTH

Brendan,

Where did you find that? I've been going through the Philips website but can not see there product lists..

I've seen this on the homebase webstite, (bayonet style) but I wasn't sure if they are the right size. The do look OK, but unless you can visualy check them it's hard to tell if they will fit..

Useless fact for you all: Those "low energy" light bulbs take a load of power on start up, this reduces quickly once the bulb is ignited, however due to this effect a "low energy" light bulb needs to be left on for around three hours before it will break even in terms of energy usage with a normal filament bulb.

For your outside light, probably left switched on for more than a few hours a day, they would be cost effective

Agreed, it wasn't easy

Philips.co.uk
topbar "Lighting >Consumer Lighting"
sidebar "Catalogue > Lamps and Gear"
Sidebar "Lamps"
Sidebar "compact fluorescent integrated"
Then you have results 1-5, including the A-shape (which might also interest you), and switch to result 6-6 which is the T-shape above.
Click on it, then top right you have PDF preview, and it even shows you the dimensions!

So much more than a usual tungsten filament? which I understood also takes a load to start up, hence why they always blow as you switch them on.

Brendan,

Thanks. I had missed the catalogue link.

That's got to be a contender for one of the least intuitive websites...
