Cottage in North Wales/Yorkshire/Scotland for New Year
Hello
We are looking at going away for New Year for a short while with a few friends. We wanted to go to some sort of cottage or cosy lodge in somewhere like...
North Wales - fun driving getting there !!
Yorkshire - wife been before and loved it
Northumbria - not too far from Newcastle airport
Scotland - not too far from any airport
Anyone done this before, or got any recommendations of places that can take 6 - 8 people ?
Dave

We've booked a gorgeous little croft on the Isle of Skye for Christmas but I struggled to find one that was vacant even though I booked it at the beginning of August.
I can totally recommend the Yorkshire Dales (we live here) so if you want any help looking for something just give me a shout Hey, you could rent our house whilst we're up in Skye

PS I think you'll be lucky ot find somewhere now, most of the decent places, in any of the areas on your list are usually booked by July.

just look on the Holiday cottages sites - we've been to:
N Yorkshire (just outside of Ripon, where the friends we went with now live! Go figure)
Lakes (twice - thoroughly recommended... you'll NEED that 4x4 )
Cotswolds - bit too quiet
Scotland (Crianlarich - village pub is a bit 'odd')
When you search - always look for places that take MORE than you need... this way you get the flexibility
One quick google gets you: http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourc...liday+cottages
Avoid places which charge more for fuel, or that have storage heaters - New Year is gonna be cold.
We always look for somewhere near a pub - we're not p1ssheads but it's always nice to have somewhere to get out to
Avoid 'cheap': get a feel for the prices, and be prepared to pay a bit more as you'll benefit for the week.
This year is a Thursday to Thursday change over, so make sure you can get time off in the week between Christmas a New Year.
Real fires are great - okay they're a pain for setting up, but there's something really special about a cold night curled up in front of a roaring fire at New Year
Oh yeah - check the cottage has a freezer. Sounds nuts? You try keeping food for several people fresh when there's nowhere to keep stuff frozen. Some cottages simply don't tell you, and it's a bloody pain when you find out upon turning up.
We're off to Norfolk this year and are paying £700 for 4 of us (splashed out a bit 'cos the place is stunning!)
Personally I'd drive wherever you're going, you'll need the car to get out and about, so try somewhere a bit out of the way (ish!).
Oh, take books and board games are always worth while! (if you hit somewhere really north you may get snowed in)
