The East is prone to the 18-30 crowd (Ayia-Nappa) so can be a bit 'noisy'. But if you like that sort of scene then fill yer boots..
Paphos on the West is quieter and possibly a little more scenic..
Problem with Cyprus is that once you've visited the sights and done the tours then there's little else.. I feel it's a great holiday destination (I agree with avoiding Limassol) but there's no 'substance' to the place.. In that there's no decent bus services or any rail links at all.. Sporting events are virtually non existent (apart from the Cyprus Rally) and the shopping is not brilliant.. One or two M&S's & a Woolies.. but that it.. Oh, and the road links are constrained to two decent motorway links between North/South & West/East.. but driveable in a few hours..
Good points are that it's a beautiful place with glorious sun etc all year round.. They speak English and they drive on the correct side of the road.. You can Ski in the mountains and within an hours drive be having a G&T on the beach getting ready to snorkel in the med..
Summary is that if you have a wife and kids who don't like the beach then it'll be a major problem.. If you're a beach bum who rides a jet ski then your sorted.. There's a decent Scoob garage in Limassol and Nicosia and they do like their imported scoobs.. This is where I got my first..
Luckily I fell into the second category and bought a Yamaha GP760 within a fortnight of landing.. 3 years later, after hitting the beach at 2 after work nearly every day, I sold it for what I paid for it and simply had the best time.. Made some great friends.. raced & tricked my Ski to a decent level and drove my Scoob in glorious weather all year round..
It's at the top of my list to retire to.. But hey, that's just my opinion..

We lived right near to Limassol and it suffers from being squeezed between East & West which are superb places to Holiday... It seems caught in not having an identity..
Famagusta is fabulous.. Enjoy..

I used to live just off Makarious (sp) Ave in Limassol, near to the Subaru dealers. The main night area, the Galatex, is awful. The hoice of young Cyps with ****e attitudes or squaddies.
