Default Sky+ problems

Sorry if this is the wrong forum - not really computer related enough......

Anyway, had Sky+ for over a year or so now however have recently started having problems with it.

First off, the amount of space being shown as available doesn't add up. For example I have about 5% worth of recorded programs on it but it only shows 49% available as free space. Tried resetting it but it's still the same.

Secondly, over the last few days I've noticed that Live Pause no longer works. The Pause graphic comes up but the program just keeps playing. It then gets quite hard to get rid of the graphic off the screen.

Finally, recording seems a bit hit and miss too. The light doesn't come on the front of the box when recording and it sometimes records it/sometimes doesn't.

Has there been some recent screwy software update to the machine without me knowing? Some of the pages look different so I suspect there has.

Any hints or tips from Sky gurus would be greatly appreciated!

Looks like the new software is causing some problems.

Using the Sky Remote key in SERVICES 4 0 1 SELECT.

then do a system rebuild and you will get your 100% space back

Rang tech support last night about live pause not working, she told me to take the card out, and turn the box off. Take out all scart leads and reconect them, then switch the box back on and insert the card.
Got to say it has worked but another thing that can not be resolved is asking for the password for films recorded after the watershed. She claims it suits most customers but it don`t suit me. I`ve got 2 late teenage children and use my pin to stop any unautherised viewing of Box Office transmisions I dont care what they watch if its on and i`m already paying but I aint giving my pin No. to them. Now I`ve got a few films recorded asking for the password to be viewed ******* stupid set up if you ask me.

Thanks guys. The housekeeping thing sorted my disc space and a reboot has cured the Live Pause thing. Only temporary though I suspect. Thanks for the links to the DigitalSpy stuff too - I emailed all the links plus some other stuff to the Technology desk at BBC News. They probably won't run with it but it made me feel better

Will that delete any saved programs or should I wait until I have watched all recorded programs?

Planner rebuild should not delete any recordings, all it's doing is a defrag and house keeping.

A full system restore in the installers menu will delete all recordings.

You can do a 'forced' software upgrade which is like the installer would do when new out of the box to bring it up to current.

Unplug it from the mains, then whilst continually holding backup button plug it back in, then when you have all the LEDS on the front lit up and a on screen message (if using SCART cable) let go of the button and leave it to download for approx 10 mins. The on screen message should go when complete and turn it back on using the remote. DO NOT UNPLUG THE MAINS OR DISH FEED WHILST IT IS DOING THIS. It shouldn't wipe out your recordings.

I`m having problems again with my live pause and rewind not working. See my above post for what they told me, I have already done this earlier which solved the problem but now it’s faulty again. The box is 2 years old now so I think I’m due an upgrade to the new bigger hard drive box.
Just phoned technical support but I was in a queue of over an hour, so promptly hung up, now I’m guessing that it was the recent software download that’s causing me this problem but can’t wait to hear what they tell me tonight. How am I best going to get them to supply me with a new box as I know they hate giving existing customers any sort of freebies. I don’t mind paying a subsidised price. But it’s getting rather annoying now and I want some sort of compensation.

I had loads of problems with my box. It turned out to be heat and the hard drive was corrupting when getting hot. Make sure its well ventilated. The older plus boxes only had limited air holes whereas my forth box is like a wire cage.

Due an upgrade? You'll be lucky mate, if u want the V3 160gb box u have to pay full whack for it. You could cancel your sub, n get a mate to sign u up at your address, mate pays so Sky has different bank details recorded, n u pay him back. Then u get the box for £49 It might work, you never know

We've got a bigger drive in our Sky+ (250GB).

TBH I think the live pause crashses are due to the software update - ours was fine prior to this...

Yes they are, a planner rebuild fixed the issue for me. The new EPG is alot slower than before as well. There are some updates to fix the issues on the way apparently.

When I had problems, I just used it as an excuse to fit a new bigger disc

I've got 1 box with 250Gb and the other with 300Gb.

Instructions here

You have done well if you have got a 300Gb working.

From digital spy

5. What's the biggest size Hard Disk that I can upgrade my Sky+ with?

The current situation with upgradable HDs are as follows:

Pace Sky+ V1: The maximum size HD that you can install appears to be 250GB. There have been some reports that "older" V1 boxes can only take up to 120GB. However the "17 minute bug" (see below) still exists with any upgraded V1 receiver.

Pace Sky+ V2: The maximum size HD that you can install at the moment is 250GB. So far, dozens of DS users have installed this size HD, and not experienced the "17 minute bug".

Amstrad Sky+: It seems the maximum size HD that you can install at the moment on the Amstrad Sky+ receiver is also 250GB. However, as Amstrad boxes seem to prefer Samsung drives, and Samsung drives over 160GB are hard to obtain at the moment, there is not as much feedback. Use of the 250GB Maxtor drive in the Amstrad box appears to be problematical.
Cheers
