this is terrible news - the in the first death in a very dangerous sport for a long time - to the point where you start taking safety for granted. I was talking to michael 2 days ago at the shakedown - he was a genuinely nice guy - my thoughts go out to his family and crew

Thats really sad news
Must have been a very heavy impact as those cars have pretty serious cages, and of course they wear helmets too.
Got to feel sorry for Marko Martin too - he must fell terrible.

""Married with children, he first began rallying on the world championship circuit in 1994 as Mark Higgins' co-driver""
My thoughts are with his wife and children foremost and with Marko Martin too.
Terrible.

What people should understand is that the Group B cars were banned because of accidents. Spectators and particpants. But modern WRC cars are just as fast, if not faster. And can have huge accidents and remain roughly in shape. But the occupants are having a hard time surviving due to the deceleration forces exerted on their bodies. I wonder if this will trigger a change in the rules to reduce car speeds..
Im not saying thats whats happened in this case. But its been a worry for a while now.

Yes, but this is probably just an unlucky freak occurrence. Notice that the driver was totally uninjured.
Conversely, when they got to Henri Toivenen's car it wasn't obvious that the bits remaining had ever been a car

Id just like to say what a great Sportsman Sebastian Loeb has been. When Peugeot retired Marcus, he would have won the title by default.
But he's deliberately incurred a time penalty so he wouldnt. You think other competitors in other sports would do so?

That is sad news - our thoughts are with all the teams - I'm sure no-one will be celebrating any kind of victory in the circumstances.
Once again its nice to see true sporting spirit particulary at a level where the stakes are so high.
I recall some years ago seeing a Gp N Lancer hit a tree head on - the tree was no thicker than my leg and it stopped the car dead in its tracks from about 50mph. Colliding with anything else is literally a softer and better option.
TT
