Angry Just got a letter from the DVLA

..asking for me to send them my licence for endorsement , I've ben found guilty this August - of having no insurance in April 2004..

All very nice but this is the first I've heard of it, digging deeper they say I lived in xxxx kent at the time..

nope, no siree - never lived there.. obviously some kinda ****-up on their part

This does not bode well for when ID cards are introducted, that's my main worry.

Actually managing to speak to a human being at the DVLA can be a challenge... finding a helpful one is unprecedented!

There's no way it'll end up on yuor license unless you were actually found guilty of it. Chill out, it's just an admin ****-up

Personally, I feel better after shouting at someone down the phone rather than just chilling out

Er, no!!!

A totally innocent person is being put under duress, has to spend their own time and energy querying, investigating and fighting a bogus charge, and is being treated like a criminal (possibly being convicted in his absence).

Indeed we do need to be be worried, especially if the same lax rules of enforcement and conviction apply to ID Cards

What planet are you on? There's no question of him being charged much less convicted, they just made a ****-up and wanted to print the offence codes on his license - which he obviously won't permit. (He wasn't placed under duress either)

ID cards don't even exist yet so how could you say that? Any system will have admin ****-ups, it's human nature. All it takes is a 5 minute phone call to sort out. Calm down dear!

I think that '5 minutes to sort out' is fanciful. Im aware of the DVLA omitting someones motorcycle entitlement when they sent him a new style licence; when he quieried the error, they demanded that he proved hed ever had it...... (the only proof being his pass slip; surrendered when you upgrade your licence!) It might be easier to deal with the court and then wait for the DVLA to catch up.....

Not true, an endorsement is automatically entered onto the system against the driver number provided by the convicting court, it is this action which prompts the letter requiring you to submit your licence for updating. They only require your actual licence to ensure that all records are the same. Incidentally, failure to supply the licence is an offence punishable by a fine and endorsements

PS: If you think a five minute phone call will sort it out, you either haven't dealt with the DVLA recently, or you are optimistic beyond belief, or both

It may well be on DVLA's system, but he'll be neither charged nor convicted legally.

Come along man It'd never get that far, and if it did, he'd never be convicted.

Yep phoning would be a mistake. I'd reply by a stiffly worded letter sent registered post, cc'ing the clerk of the convicting court.

Bet they don't do it. You'll get another letter in a few weeks to tell you that you have been found guilty of failing to provide your licence!

I think I'd bet that too.

Modern 'clerical' systems seem to involve having people thinking as little as possible. Thinking, communicating and common sense are all thrown out as a threat to efficiency

Well according to post #24, the deed had already been done (although they did promise to remove the points)

Conviction and punishment by post - that's disgusting!!!!!

No, the DVLA has the conviction / points on their system which is *NOT* the same as being convicted (in court).

Exclamation

...and where is the official description of your licence entitlement and endorsements (i.e. where do the Police and/or courts go to check)? Seems like a done deal to me.

Did anyone see Watchdog tonight? The DVLA incorrectly adding points to your licence is only the tip of the iceberg - and again, who holds the definitive record of your entitlement and endorsements?

SCAREY!!!!
