I was there for a couple of days in 1999. It's got one of the ugliest town halls on the planet - when you're used to soviet buildings, all the lovely oldie worldie prussian houses are a real breath of fresh air, then you simply won't believe the bombproof (and it looks like someone tried a few times) monstrosity that is visible from most of the city. Plus side is masses of cheap amber jewellery (don't get the stuff that obviously has a spider inside, they just reheat it and put in whatever insect you can think of).
