Unlucky A choice between an airbus or boeing 747, take the boeing everytime. Safety record stats speak for themselves. Cant you get a ship there?

Don't go cancelling any flights just yet, this is the first accident of an A340 ever!
Also, this incident could possibly be due to pilot error/environment rather than an 'Airbus' problem...

So now you know what to look out for next time your flying!
A300, feller with funny white uniform and metallic clanging coming from under his coat
767 - similar to above, but they fly these into buildings
747 - A feller walking on unusually high platform shoes!

Boeing build quality can be suspect. I used to work for BAe, and loads of fitters moved to support British Airways in their service centre at Heathrow - one of these told me about a major service they had done where they had to remove a bulkhead as part of the process. They were really shocked to discover that the bulkhead behind wasn't riveted at all, and was only held in place by the locator pins that are used to align holes for riveting. Now while the aircraft hadn't actually failed, what does it say about Boeing QA?
AIRBUS is not necessarily better, but I do know that they have much more complex analysis for aeroelastics (how an airframe dynamically bends when being used), and the margins used are massive. Boeing tend to have simpler analysis, but then use even larger margins to ensure safety. The net effect is that Boeings are stronger and heavier than the equivalent AIRBUS, this means that they cost more to run and explains why AIRBUS is now the No1 manufacturer in terms of units sold per year.
But being realisitic when did you last hear of an aircraft falling to pieces in the air (except where a bomb was involved)? The last one that I heard about was a Boeing with an explosion in the centre fuel tank from an exposed wire. Unless we include Concorde as being AIRBUS....
Take a ship... oh they sink don't they...
Stay at home then.

Open your eyes!
Of all of the Airbuses that have ever crashed in the entire company's history...Out of 20 craft. ALL but six that crashed were in the ownership of 3rd world based airlines
It's not the fault of the plane..its the operators mainatanence and the pilots that fly them
In contrast I'd prefer to avoid 737s and 757s both of which are old ageing planes with many old models still in commercial service (most old 747s now have been repalced or tranfered to cargo duties and 3rd world operators ).
Now question upon which airline I'd prefer to travel on. Well I wouldn't touch one single 3rd world based airline - EVER, I actually cancelled a holiday when I found out I was flying with Pakistan airlines (poor safety record).

I really cant see why anyone would be afraid of flying (unless they have been or know someone who has been involved in an air crash!) With the amount of cars on the road, statistcally speaking, you are FAR more likely to crash getting to the airport!
I think people are scared because an air crash gains great media attention, and can wipe out a lot of people at a time, whereas a car crash may get covered in the local rags?

Reading the eyewitness accounts on the bbc site it appears that the weather was absolutely foul and drivers were pulling onto the hard shoulder because they couldn't see far enough. Others that regularly watch aircraft approach from their offices commented that this plane was coming in too high and too fast - which would happen if the pilot was caught out by a strong gust from behind. He came down onto the runway much further down than he should have onto a runway that was covered in water and hailstones, and there was a very large lightning strike just as he touched down.
Pilots who had read the accounts couldn't understand why the pilot was attempting to land at all - a 747 had already diverted to another airport having assessed the conditions too dangerous to land.
It would appear that the decision to attempt to land in the conditions was the primary cause of the crash, and like most aircraft accidents was nothing to do with the aircraft at all.
