Driving Instructor Training.Anyone here done it
I am seriously considering a career change and have always fancied the idea of becoming a driving instructor.
I've seen a few ads recently in the press about driver training centres, etc. Has anyone taken up the challenge?
Which instructor organisation did you use?
Anyone with any advice (other than 'don't do it') would be welcome.
Cheers
Steve

Earnings can be quite poor if you work within a firm as they take a huge whack away from you!
Potential earnings around £30000 for about 50hrs per week so it isn't the best paid job!
The course costs between £2500-£3000 and you need to sit 3 parts to become qualified!
1st part being an advanced theory test paper consisting of 100 questions! I believe the pass mark is 85%. Its basically the same kind of questions you would normally get but includes a lot of the highway code and other topics!
2nd part being an advanced driving test which is supposed to consist of around 25-30hrs driving tuition before your thrown in for an advanced driving test!
3rd part......If you pass stage 2 you then have to learn instructional technique which is more lessons and then at the end sit in a car with an examiner who will role play lots of kinds of people. From the 17yr old boyracer to the 65 yr old panicking old woman! You have to be in control of the vehicle at all times!
Pass all 3 stages and then you'll be guaranteed a job at the end of it but you have to work serious hours to earn a decent wage! Work the average 37 hours a week and you'll earn around £20-22000!
I am not a driving instructor, just 2nd hand information from an uncle who is!
If your short tempered, become annoyed easily and are impatient then do not even think about it! Seriously it is very stressfull! You get all kinds of idiots that will just not take any notice of your trying to tell them. Some people especially women have 100-150 lessons before tests and end up failing 5 or 6 times! I passed after 16hrs tuition 1st time so its not hard!!
Also get used to going pathetically slow, holding up traffic with tonnes of cars up your rear end frustration at every other driver on the road who are driving incorrectly, speeding, not checking mirrors, indicating etc!!
It takes a certain person to become a happy driving instructor! I very much doubt i'd have the patience!

Top tip. *IF* you do go for it then make sure your car has dual controls! My ex-father-in-law who was an instructor reckoned it saved his bacon more than once!

This is of no use to you, but all I can imagine here is a driving instructor arriving in his subaru, now that would have been interesting when learning!
