A question for a solicitor or a police officer
A friend of the family has been found not guilty of conspiracy to rob, but is still on trial for conspiracy to steal.
But whats the difference?? I thought they were the same.

No they are not the same. Theft is dishonestly misapropriating property belonging to another with the intention to permanantly deprice them of it.
It becomes robbery when violence, or the threat of violence is used in the course of the theft.
In terms of sentence, robbery is a far graver crime(generally) than theft.

Turboman is nearly right
theft is dishonestly appropriating property belonging to another with the intention to permanantly deprive them of it, for the benefit of themselves or another, and "steal" shall be construed accordingly
theft is Robbery, if you steal and at the time of doing so or immediately before, and in order to do so, you use force, or the threat of such force being there and then applied on another, and in order to steal
