I need to get a skateboard urgently for an 11 yr old - never skateboarded before...
Presumably if you spend too little it won't work properly and won't encourage further use... Obviously don't want to spend too much as it might get wrecked, or get lost in a cupboard as another 'tried it and didn't like it' episode...
Comon... Somebody must board or have kids that do... You answers may not help if you 'used to' in 1982 - but give us a laugh anyway
Cheers

I ride a Think skateboard. SS20 in Oxford stock them and are jolly nice chaps.
You'll need a deck http://www.ss20.com/search.asp?searchbox1=think+decks
And undercarriage http://www.ss20.com/products.asp?cat...Undercarriages
Even the cheapest undercarriage above will do the job nicely.
Edit to add: I fall off more than I ride, so a helmet is a good idea.

A big problem with cheap budget stuff is that the wheels and bearings are turd so the board will hardly move which is no good to anyone, even a beginner. Routeone and rollersnakes are about the biggest on line retailers and they do some decent budget stuff i.e midway between argos type crap and a pro set up. Speak to them or browse their sites for decent brands and then search the bay for bargains.
I skated for over 10 years and still keep my hand in so if you need any more info, feel free to email me.
Jimmy.

Thanks guys... Cheapest kit for rollersnakes comes out at £80 inc delivery...
I think realistically we could do with a 'pre-loved' board here... - I don't think it needs to look perfect - but work well (a bit like my Scoob ) - a bit more cred with a classy used board I reckon (until he tries to use it )
He's decided he wants it for his birthday now... so we've got another week... - Any ebay vendors worth checking? - also protective equipment should a £20 kit for all pads be OK?
Cheers

It's for an 11 year old who will probably get bored (excuse the pun) with it before the bearings break!
Why would you spend £80 on a new board for an 11 year old???
Get something cheap from Argos/Woolworths/etc and if they are serious, get them something nicer for Christmas/next birthday.

Toys r Us Would do the job nicely for learning on...
As Andy mentioned if he starts to show a serious interest 'then' you could get him a 'branded' board/accesories....

Probably right chaps... The proper kit is a bit too expensive for a try-out. I think it will be the woolies level stuff until he proves he's going to use it properly and often enough. I bet if we gave him the choice of £80 cash or an £80 skateboard he wouldn't take very long to make up his mind
Thanks for the pointers... I'll maybe contact some of you with experience here if he progresses a bit further.
Cheers Guys
Mick
