Minor 'day patient' operations?
Having only recently marginally failed in amputating my left thumb,by rather clumsily dropping a particularly large and heavy Grinding Wheel Arbour on it
Tomorrow I am faced with minor surgery to re-attach severed nerves and tendons in said thumb...whilst only under only a 'local'
Bearing in mind that old Elmer don't do Pain,Injections,Blood,Suffering or Discomfort of any shape kind or form, obviously I am not particularly looking fwd to it.(while perfectly appreciating that my medical predicament significantly pales in comparison to some others)
but, just HOW MUCH IS THIS GONNA HURT?
Jon

Good luck for tomorrow, but i wouldnt pack your overnight bag! Thursday afternoon, other half had an accident with a pain of glass and had a massive deep wound in his hand and couldnt feel his fingers. Local hospitial patched him up but we had to go to St Helens the following morning to have surgery on it. Spent all day waiting for surgery and got sent home, so had to go back the following day. (It is about a 70 minute journey each way) but after spending all Saturday there we got sent home again. Luckily his feeling came back into his fingers and he didnt need a skin graft after all. Decided not to go back for surgery and he is under the local GP. So good luck for tomorrow. And other half reckons it bladdy hurts.

Probably not much, but its a visual thing if you are squeamish. I drilled through my thumb once with a 6mm bit, didn't hurt (much), but when I rinsed it under the cold tap and saw the internal workings the GAG reflex took over in no uncertain terms

yeah, he upchucked as well! The doctors and nursers were really nice and helpful but they kept running out of time so we kept getting sent home. Have you thought about having a general as it doesnt hurt when you are out of it!

Sorry, local (vs general) is safer for hand surgery especially nerve and vein work.
As to pain, none? (very little) If the nerves are really damaged, pain afterwards will be less of a problem.Sedation maybe (during).
A tourniquet is used, so some pressure like feeling only (i'm told)and a 4 hour limit if I remember, at the time anyway.Afterwards....?
Do they use leeches? (half joking)
Is my spelling ok? punctuation?
Good luck. assuming its not cancelled .or anyway

How can any operation hurt when you have been adminstered anaesthetic? God, you men are such wooses
I had a baby removed from via my abdomen under a spinal so I was still awake.. you feel it, it just doesn't hurt.
Stock up on some ibuprofen... you will be right as rain

Recovery after a general is not good so with a small injury why take the risk? More and more surgery is being done under local or spinal because the patient recovers immediately the drug wares off - better by far I would say
Mind you, if sawing or bone cracking were necessary I would probably prefer to be asleep LOL

Will probably have to remain conscious so you can move the thumb so they know they're doing it right.
It'll hurt.
big time.
sorry...

No it w'ont hurt AT ALL if its done properly. Whole fingers can be regrafted under local/regional anaesthesia, no probs. No pain, minor discomfort for a few minutes max
You w'ont see anything as it will be draped
You'll be fine, relax.
I'd recommend taking a personal stereo with you to listen to during the op, it'll take your mind off things
Good luck
