Thats a real worry I think, hope it does not develop into something nasty.

Fair enough .... but surely any race driver that's spent a couple of seasons in open-wheeled cars would have brake dust in their lungs, whether it's carbon fibre or conventional racing pad dust?

doesent surprise me in the least. I cant remember who it was but a few years back someones brakes exploded under extremely heavy braking. If course he raced hard right up until they did, but under braking you could see plumes of dust coming off the wheels as he slowed down.
Hope Salo is okay, what are the complications of C/F dust in the lungs?

Indeed. Can you imagine walking round with a F1 rear wing developing inside?

Frentzen, Jordan, Canada

CF is very carcinogenic. Which sadly doesnt bode well for his future health. Or any other open top driver as mentioned above. Personally, if I get some on my skin, I get a rash. So as for your lungs!

Must be loads of brake and rubber dust in the air we all breathe.
It can't disappear.
It presumably settles and then gets washed down drains. Still somewhere.
Remember how dodgy "special fuels" in F1 were said to be some years ago?
Trouble is, it would seem that most things that improve our lives can also be bad.
Even natural things, ie hardwood dust.

Bloody wimps, the old style drivers had neat avgas in their lungs, or even the odd suspension or steering component, best cured by a magnum of champers and a young bird sitting on the face !

Looks like the FIA will have to ban brakes

Nuvolari, one of the most fantastic drivers ever, died from inhaling fumes from the cars he drove.

Doesn't matter how much money you make out of the sport, its no good to you when you are dying from emphysema or lung cancer at an early age. Your future life is always far more important than what you have done in your previous life. Can't feel too good when you know you have only got a short time left!

Bet they all start wearing face masks now. I would.

Well, it goes back to the point that drivers like Berger and Hill were making over 10 years ago -- get the steel brakes back, big slick tyres, reduced aerodynamic grip and we might actually see some s0dding racing for a change because of longer braking distances, more opportunities for slipstreaming etc.

Funny how it's taken the F1 administration a decade to realise this. All the crap that's talked about "F1 being the pinnacle of motoring technology" went out of the window as soon as cars like the twin-chassis Lotus and the 6-wheel Tyrrel were banned.

Not good Incidently brickboy - it's a myth that carbon fibre brakes stop the car quicker than steel brakes - not true. There is no difference. Brundle was explaining this during the shambles that was the US GP. The use of carbon fibre brakes has more to do with weight saving.

That is a good philosophical question.
Life, a shorter more fun one or longer and more well, ordinary.
Of course you don't know anyway and attitude can change over time.

Problems of noxious stuff and protection surely applies to lots of others dealing with the cars, mechanics etc.

I'll bet it wasnt Brundle that said that. In fact I'll bet it wasnt anybody on ITV.

Have a think again
