They decide on what criteria makes people 'powerful' then put the results in a list, and bingo a story on 'the most powerful'?!!

 

I think its the whole role model thing. The NBA have HUGE community based projects (stay in school, wishing well type things ect) and in the world of advertising they are a very powerful tool for the companies. The fanatical following of B-Ball in the US far exceeds that of football here.
Jordan has become one of the worlds richest sports personalities through his sponsorship and his clothing lines. The money he got from The Bulls was a pitance compared to the deals signed today.
